not good
Had the potato latkes. The oil they were cooked in was not good, and the texture was terrible. And in the unfortunately now-typical practice (a sign that the Civilized World As We Know It is coming to an end) they microwaved them to heat them, which of course made the texture worse. A place that sells so much quality food should be consistent.

Poor conditions
Last night (saturday) we stopped at the cafe for a yogurt. Although the yogurt was good, the cafe was not clean. You couldn't find a clean spot on the tables to put down your food and the floor, well everything and anything was on it. The workers were too busy socializing with each other and not paying attention to the cleaning of the area. On the way out, when I went to throw out my finished cup, it was hard to find room in the garbage can. Mr. Zabar, I know that you are a fixture in Manhattan, but that doesn't mean that your establishment should be sub-par. We won't be coming back!

"Real NY"
For what it is supposed to be a place to grab a quick bite this is an excellent place. Space is extremely limited and turnover is high (look on the bright side, that means that the food is on the fresh). Their hot chocolate is outstanding and a great value! Personally I like the no-bs attitude of the people behind the counter. They are efficient, accomodating, and ready to smile.

Great for what it is
A fabulous place to stop for a good and cheap ($3.95) bagel with lox. Throw in a Boylan's Root Beer for a buck and take the whole thing outside and sit at one of the benches in the median on Broadway and it's heavenly.

Good value, but crowded
5 dollar meal: bagel with cream cheese and lox, small coffee, small fresh OJ. Definitely only enough food for breakfast, but I like the value. Hard to find a place to sit, often near strangers. Can't fault them for being popular though...
