I don't drink green tea and tap water so I had no problem with the service . The sushi here very fresh and big slice . Love the spicy mayo.

The only time I ever have wrote a review is when a place is horrendous and that was like only a 2 times. However, yama is so good i am compelled to write a review of how good it is even though this may give away my secret spot. I have no idea what some of these bad reviews are as I eat and order from there many time and it is consistently amazing in food decore and price and surpases haru, sushi yasuda, hatsuhana especially when compared with price. The fish is some of the freshest i have ever had.

I have been a loyal customer of the Yama chain for 11 years now. My wife and I have been dinning in the Irving st location since we started dating and we love their fish quality and food selection. When we heard the news that the Yama empire is opening a new location on 49th street, we were more than ecstatic because we work in midtown and boy were we WRONG!! Yama has successfully hired the rudest group of people, from waiters, waitresses, to the 4 sushi chefs and the maitre-d’. This location is a SHAME to the Yama name! Everybody works in that location is least described by “cocky” but to serve them justice, you can safely call them “rude”. We didn’t only give 1 or 2 chances but we’ve made 4 visits but THISIS IT!! WE really can’t take this embarrassing service anymore! Try to ask them to be seated in a boot, you get the “No” answer and the “Go …. Yourself, we’re better than you” look. They claim they keep it for parties of 3 or more but more than 50% of the time you see couples in them. Try to ask for a glass of water, you get “Ahh, not again” sigh! My wife today asked the sushi chief for some white rice with her order and boy did he make her feel awkward. He kept making fun of her and taking in Mandarin (Notice not Japanese, none of them are authentic Japanese sushi chiefs). He kept discussing it with the waitress who gave us the look, who spoke to the maitre-d who also gave us the look! Same goes for asking for anything else from Green Tea to extra rolls to order later! Bottom line, if you want to some above average fish and be treated like a slave and pay top money for that, this is your place!!

My normal sushi lunch spots in the neighborhood were full by 1pm...so I rolled the dice and tried Yama.....next time I think I will take my chances eating raw fish from Dagostino's. Very poor quality fish...poor selection. Truly an embarrasment for the neighborhood. The decor was great however...they did a wonderful job on the renovation....but I would rather eat fresh fish, than be in nice surroundings.

This may be one of the poorest sushi dinners I've ever had. Seems to be run by non-Japanese people who don't understand the importance of fish quality. I was actually served four pieces of imitation crab meat on my sashimi platter. Only the salmon was acceptable; everything else was subpar. Go there if you don't care about getting authentic sushi and just want a nice ambience...

Went here last night with 3 others and had an incredible meal! The rolls were huge, the sashimi pieces were fresh and big and the wait staff was very attentive! We had to wait around 30 minutes for a table, but it was well worth it. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food we consumed. Definitely can't wait to go back again!
