Excellent sushi, but always frustrating to call ahead...
The sushi is not the best I've had, but it's definitely pretty damn good. I have only ordered for pick-up. Whenever I call ahead to order, it is almost impossible to get through--sometimes literally 15 minutes. Then when I finally get through, I typically get put on hold for another 2 minutes. There is almost always a language barrier too, making it extremely difficult to even place the order. It NEVER fails! I definitely only recommend this place if you are actually eating at the restaurant or don't mind not calling ahead before picking up your order.

Thawed cardboard
Overlarge portions of limp, tasteless fish on an unimpressive & malformed bed of rice. I recently gave it another chance after swearing never to return 10 years ago. Not only was all of my sushi bland, it literally all tasted the same. The seaweed was limp and the rice tasted like old dirty water. The waitstaff was rude and inattentive; the seating cramped and decor uninspiring. Inexplicably, the place is consistently packed. There are dozens of excellent sushi places in the city and hundreds of good ones (some within a stones throw, try Joop on 3rd) - why waste good money on such a horrific meal. Maybe I'll try again in 10 years...

I Always Leave Satisfied
I always leave satisfied. Large size portions and always fresh. The head chef is also a ggreat guy and a pro in his field. I love going there and will always be back.

Eat in/Take out portions different for same price
The food is great; that is not my problem. Recently I ordered Chirashi off their take out menu. It costs the same price as eating in, but I received a lot less food. Not only were the slices of sashimi smaller (usually huge when eating in) but there were a lot less pieces. I got one piece of salmon as opposed to at least three when I stay at the restaurant. Not cool.

fresh fish but not my favorite spot
The sushi and sashimi pieces very fresh but are almost too big. I would rather get a smaller piece and be charged less. The rolls are sloppily put together but they are not known for their rolls. The waitstaff is rude and the sushi chefs are preparing so quickly that we had a mistake with our order which is not a big deal but we noticed that others about that too. Not a bad sushi spot but not on my go to list.

For true sushi lovers only
Only come to this place if you have a SERIOUS love for sushi. If not, this place will not be worth the money, the cramped space and the temperamental waitstaff. That said, this place is hands down THE BEST sushi in the city. The freshest sushi every time and the specials rolls are TO DIE FOR. #5 and #7 are always a hit with everyone I bring.

The Best
I've tried all the places in city...Nobu, Sushi of Gari, Haru, Samba, Seki, etc. Yama is hands down the best of them all. They have the freshest fish every time I go. I recommend sitting at the bar because if you are going to Yama you are going for the food not for the ambiance.
