Used to be good but now...

I posted a review on 6/25/08 under the same name and while the food was decent then, this past week has been a nightmare. The "Steamed Streaky Pork" appetizer that I ordered for a dinner delivery was undercooked and it gave me attendant symptoms for the entire week. I know it was this dish because I hadn't eaten all day and the dish was oddly cold (as in "chilled") and the Pork Fried Rice I had also ordered from them seemed to be sufficiently cooked through. This restaurant used to be a "go to" standard for me for Chinese food when I couldn't make the trek to Chinatown or Flushing for over five years but now with the slapdash cooking or lack of food hygiene evidenced by this above experience, I have no choice but to strike them off my dining list. What a pity.

    Great Lunch Spot

The General Tso's Chicken with White Meat strips($2) extra for white meat is one of the best things off of a Chinese restaurant menu. Almost everything on the $6.95 lunch menu is a good deal. The soups are slightly better than the average Chinese restaurant. The vegetable fried rice that is included with the lunch is tasty and somewhat healthy, while still being flavorful. The delivery people are fast and say thank you for a $2 tip, which is not the case with all delivery people. As far as dinner goes, it is obviously more money, but still worth it for consistent Chinese food and quick service

    Bright light and table cloths?

This used to be a lovely place to go and dine; it had soft lighting, table cloths and excellent food. Now they keep the spot lights above every table turned up to high and shining down like it is a coffee shop. Like the ambiance, the food has declined with the years; but maybe it is because nothing tastes so good in that harsh light.

    Way Downhill

Used to be good but now..... subpar. Greasy, oily inedible. I gave them 3 chances and each was worse than the last. This is the 1st negative review I have posted on this site but felt it necessary.

    Food's still good service poor

I've been a customer for years, both as a walk-in diner and as a delivery customer. On Monday 6/23/08, I walked in at about 9pm and ordered. The food was good but my entree came out before my appetizer and when I asked about it, the waiter gruffly told me that it "was on the way." I don't know about you but the reason an appetizer is supposed to come first is that it's to whet your appetite. Besides, it was a cold appetizer, which didn't go with my hot entree and while I ate my appetizer, my entree got cold. While the quality of the food was still good, service was poor. Furthermore, waiters were walking around the main dining floor with shirts all completely hanging out (not just shirt tails) and ties askew. Why bother dressing your waitstaff up if you're going to allow them to walk around like it was a locker room? This is not some shabby dive or somebody's home (not at these prices)! Even waiters in the shabbiest dive in Chinatown show more professionalism than these jokers.

    Wait staff has significantly improved

I've been going here for two years and have an update on the wait staff others have complained about, they used to have an older gentlemen that was somewhat rude (maybe 'cold' is a better word) working as the main host - he also answered the phone. That man is gone and now they have a *very* nice gentlemen doing his job. I've always found the rest of the wait staff quite nice, and that still holds true for me. I like this place for both sit down and take out chinese food, it doesn't have any dishes that will really knock you out, but it's the best in the neighborhood in my opinion.

    Best wonton soup!

This place ties with Chef Ho for best Chinese food in Upper East Side/ Yorkville. I go there when I want decent Chinese, but don't want to spend an arm & a leg. Their wonton soup is amazing, their pepper steak is excellent, and so are their lettuce chicken wraps. Service could be improved, but it's good food for the money. If you go in and order take out, it's ready in a snap!
