When in the Big Apple, 17 Mott St. is the place to go for the best Chinese food at the best prices in Chinatown(there are two of them-make sure you go to the one downstairs). WonTon soup with lots of beef and vegetables; an orange chicken dish that's not too sweet; Special Lo Mein that's got squid and octopus(now thats special!!). It can be a long wait, but it's well worth it. Like Metman, I gotta say I'd rather not eat Chinese food if it ain't Wo Hop. I didn't give top marks for service because(like anything New York)the restaurant moves at a hectic pace. And as far as atmosphere goes, personally I enjoy the company of happy fellow New Yorkers ejoying their friends and food. Great food, Great prices, and fast service 24hours a day. You simply can't beat it ANYWHERE.

I am originally from Queens and ate only at Wo Hop! A few years ago I moved to South Fla and refuse to eat at any Chinese restaurant here. I will wait until I travel up to NYC to eat my favorite Chinese dishes. My all time favorite is Chow Fun! If only they would deliver to Fla!

Best hot and sour soup anywhere. You go to Wo Hops to eat, not for atmosphere (you shouldn't need any if you're with friends). As for the "Not for Locals" review, obviously if you are Chinese you shouldn't be taking advice from your non-Asian friends about where to eat. Besides, if you're Chinese, you wouldn't order from the menu anyway, I suggest you go back a couple of time untill they know you.

My Uncle Joe who lived in the city took me to Wo Hops for the very 1st time on my 16th birthday. My husband & I now live in GA and visit NYC about once a year. Wo Hops is usually one of our yearly destinations when we visit the great city! Great food, good service.

Tried it at the encouragement of non-Asian friends, and was dissapointed. Chinese people simply don't eat there. There's a long line of non-Chinese, and it's a favorite of cops and firemen, so if you judge your cuisine according to where cops and firemen and not locals eat, then this is your "joint".

I remember the days back in the early 70's when we would all go to Wo Hops after a long night of partying. 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning was the best time to go , as the wait would only be 1/2 hour. Now whenever I am back in town with my kids , we always make a trip to Mott street to grab a bite. The only difference is now it's not at 4 AM, I am a lot grayer, and I can actually remember what I ate. My wife and kids just can't relate. Who cares....I force them to go anyhow.

Anyone who says the food is ok or eh then you haven't eaten here. WoHop is the best you will find. I have gone here for about 10 years at least. Tried a few other ones not great taste the same as your usual Chinese Restaurant. But WoHop is great. Try the 4 D Low Chow Fun with NO veggies...and the wonton egg drop...Go enjoy late at night like after 10.
