Great - don't understand others
I don't understand why others are complaining, except perhaps they were seated in the front, much noisier and more casual seeming bar area and I go to the quieter back room. The food is wonderful, homey, peasant food done with a flair -- I love the gizzards and hearts dish. I think if you want a burger, you can't beat Big Nick's across the street; so, why go to West Branch?

Going downhill in a hurry
I have dined at West Branch a number of times since it opened. Last night we walked in for dinner and were delighted to be seated immediately. Then I opened the menu and my jaw dropped. Prices have increased substantially since this restaurant opened and the entire moderately priced section devoted to sandwiches/panini was gone! The only sandwich survivors are the Cuban panini ($15) and the burger ($19) which now appear with pricier entrees on the main page. Note several of the entrees are close to or over the $30 mark. Then came the food. As noted by other reviewers the kitchen is definitely having salt issues. I ate three of the cheddar gourgettes...the first so salty I choked down a bite, the second so bland I couldn't believe it shared a plate with the first! The rest of my meal was uninspired. I'll skip my next visit. I can spend my money elsewhere. And afford to treat some friends for the same price!

give them a chance
its a new shoppe in the nabe. I had a great bar tour. great servers and a eccentric old money crowd who don't frown upon random drop ins. food, and service looked sharp and clean. The staff works hard to be efficient and warm. keep it up you will make it!.

Bad Service
I have NEVER had a worse dining experience in NYC and I have lived here for over 20 years. We had to ask repeatedly (actually beg) the server for everything including the menu, to please please please take our order, our wine and the check. And what made matters worse was that our booth was RIGHT NEXT to the servers station and our server was there every few minutes but ingored us. The worst was that the server bumped into our table and knocked over our wine bottle and wine spilled out of the bottle. She took the bottle away to clean it up but brought us back the same bottle, even though they was a lot less wine in it! didn't even offer us another glass let or acknowledge it at all. We let the server know about the bad experience and spoke to the manager. I don't think they really cared! Also, it's an incredibly loud place. Food was pretty good but overall experience was lousy. We live close by and we will never go back - there are much better options.

very disappointing
i had lunch today and was extremely disappointed...menu was very limited...wine selection not great (even the waiter said only 2 of the red wines by the glass were worth it)....salad was too salty...hamburger was too small for the bun and tough.... i ate in the bar area and it seemed that only people who worked there were eating there...it is such a large space that i can't see how he will make enough money to survive

No red French wine by the glass?
French food at the bar, but no french red wine! We like this place a lot, the food is good, the staff is very friendly and the only attitude comes from the guests... But no French wine by the glass with Gougeres or Choucroute or confit or haricots verts, Houlala!

First visit finds the place...
...not bad. The service was fast and pleasant. The food was quite good, depending on your tastes: The marinated seafood salad contained virtually nothing but seafood (there was a bit of celery thrown in), which was just fine with me; my lunch companion, who had the same dish, would have preferred the inclusion of more, um, salad--lettuce, you know, that sort of thing. It was, I thought, a bit pricey at $16, as was the coffee ($4 hot, $5 iced). A nice touch: the warm bread that appeared as soon as we were seated. I'll probably give it a second visit.
