Disappointing
Sunday Brunch for 4. A very nice looking restaurant with friendly, professional, and efficient staff. I knew it was pricey with a good reputation when we made the reservation so was expecting a good meal. Each of us thought the food was very disappointing and average at best. An unpleasant surprise when I received the bill was an $8 charge for what I believed was a sample side dish of something I had asked about. For perspective, had I ordered the full entree it was included in for the table it would have only cost $13. And it was sauerkraut! I would spend my money elsewhere.

A Triple, If Not A Home Run
A friend and I celebrated his birthday at Wallse last evening. I have been meaning to try this restaurant for years and finally did. We were escorted to our table at the exact time of our reservation. The room had a warm, relaxed yet sophisticated feel to it. The four course tasting menu was delicious, the portions ample and the food excellently prepared. The only slight failing of the evening might have been the service. Our waiter seemed distracted at times and disappeared on several occasions. The evening was also not an inexpensive one. However, I will return to Wallse again in the future.

Really?
Was excited to check out what the place was all about but it was just overpriced dished with rushed service. Won't go back again

Sumptuous sunset
My friend, daughter (2-years-old) and I went to Wallse for dinner last night. The experience was absolutely LOVELY! The service was super attentive. The staff was very sweet with my little girl and catered to her whims...brought her a paper cup for her water, kept picking up the napkins and flatware that she dropped quite frequently and replaced it, chatted and sang with her, etc. They were just so sweet and kind and helped us with our food and wine selections. They didn't rush us through our dinner and allowed us to enjoy every bite without hurrying to clean away our plates. We sat outside and felt really comfortable. We could see the Hudson River and the sunset and it was pretty magical. The food was elegantly prepared, fresh, absolutely delectable and very pretty on the plate. We shared the Spätzle braised rabbit, wild mushrooms, peas, tarragon as an appetizer. While there wasn't much rabbit in the dish, the flavor was light, creamy, a bit earthy from the mushrooms, herby and simple - very nice. Then my friend had the Maine Lobster cherries, fava beans, bérnaise sauce. OMG! I thought I died and went to heaven - it was so good. Who would think of pairing cherries with lobster?? Brilliant. I shared the Wiener Schnitzel potato-cucumber salad, lingonberries with my daughter. It was cooked to perfection and the salad was spot on. Very straightforward and traditional. The wines we had with dinner (my friend had white and I had red) were really delicious and paired perfectly. For dessert we shared the Quark Cheese Panna Cotta vanilla scented rhubarb, strawberry sorbet. It was just the perfect ending to a really lovely meal. Refreshing, beautiful, just lovely. The coffee was really good, too. And then when we thought our experience was coming to an end they brought out a sweet little plate with hazelnut cookies that were so delicate and crispy and cocoa covered almonds that were just divine. It was a most perfect experience. Next time we go for brunch!!! Can't wait!

Wallse's 2 Sides
I have eaten at Wallse about 15 times now. It is possible to eat absolutely outstanding fish dishes here - perfectly cooked with elegant and occasionally divine flavors. 1-2 Michelinstars in my mind. Unfortunately, the meat dishes disappoint in comparison which is a problem for a restaurant that prides itself with Austrian typicity. Now, I am not talking about the Wiener Schnitzel: the reviewers on this website who judge this to be "pedestrian" clearly don't understand how difficult it is to make a breaded piece of veal into something so light and absolutely elegant. Simple ingredients executed to perfection. I am talking about the other meat dishes - the Gulasch and above all the Tafelspitz (called Kavalierspitz here) which in Vienna wouldn't pass even in a fairly average (and much cheaper) restaurant. The meat tough, the taste by far not what it can be. On my last occasion about a month ago I was pretty concerned about the speed with which dishes arrived - appetizers arrived literally 4-5 minutes after having been ordered. What is going on with that? I noticed the same issue at the Blaue Gans, Wallse's simpler sister restaurant in Tribeca. Has Gutenbrunner started to pre-prepare food so as to be able to be able to serve more people per night and increase revenue? If that is the case, the Michelin star should be lost and the prices should be significantly decreased. Overall - a year or two ago I ate absolutely excellent fish dishes here in a very pretty atmosphere and accompanied by excellent wines. The meat dishes (except for the Schnitzel) have always tended to disappoint and recently there seems to be an issue with pre-prepared dishes.

Awesome
I went here last night and having never been there, I was a little tepid going into it b/c I checked out the menu and there are certainly some rare items on there. Well we did the tasting menu with wine paring and everything we had was superb! The service was quite good as well. I would definitely recommend it to anybody!

best meal in recent memory
Went to Wallse for dinner last night and had one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. Fabulous wine list, superb food, and a lovely atmosphere. The only thing we ordered that I didn't like was the bland squash soup, but everything else (especially the fish dishes) was incredible.
