What is up with all this haterade? Virgil's is one of the few places me and my office-mates can agree on, getting a meal leaving everyone full, happy AND satisfied! The brisket is the best i have had in NY, excellent mac and cheese too. the desserts aren't all that, but after such a heavy meal, maybe that's a good thing!

    Over Rated? Yes!

Okay so how do I put this delicately? ...I have had better! If you are looking for a restaurant that has put a corporate spin on Southern Cooking, this may be it. It is not the worst BBQ I have ever had, but it is nowhere near the best either. The truth is that part of what gives Southern food it's flavor is the typically quaintness of it's surroundings; aka-genuine atmosphere and you are going to have a epic time of attempting to reproduce this anywhere in Manhattan. However, Virgil's attempt to bring BBQ to NYC in their own version of it's quasi-corporate-chain way of doing things was a disappointment to me. Not to mention that the food tasted like it was actually prepared a day or two ahead of time and kept alive in a steam table until they brought it to my table..."Down Home"? Not close.

    I loved it!

I came in late and ate at the bar. The service was attentive and friendly. I got a pork sandwich that was just freaking excellent, especially with a cold beer and some friendly chatter at the bar. The sides (fries, mac & cheese) were also very tasty. I loved how they put a bit of coleslaw on my sandwich. Maybe it's better as semi-drunk food, but I thought Virgil's was honestly one of the best meals I had in NYC. I highly recommend it!

    Rushed in and out

Have to agree with some of the others, we arrived there only to be told we have 45 minutes to eat and move out. The food came 2 minutes after we ordered it we gulped it down payed the bill and left...Not a really good experience considering the price isn't that cheap....

    Never again

I couldn't wait to dine at Virgils, but what a disappointment. We were greeted, and shown to our time promptly. Our waitress greeted us with a smile and answered all of our questions. That is where the experience took a downward turn. We ordered drinks and our meals, and no sooner did we have our drinks we had our food within 5 mins. There was no way it was freshly prepared. It seemed like reheated food. It wasn't even really hot, warm.. I ordered the shrimp and ribs, the shrimp was tough, with sauce thrown on top of them, the ribs were nothing to write home about. I used the restroom at the restaurant, and there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. I had to tell the staff.

    Not recommended

Coming from the south and living in the city i've looked hard for good and authentic bbq restaurants; i was told this was it. wrong! The ribs tasted like liquid smoke was poured over it and the chicken lacked seasoning and flavor.

As a bbcue connoisseur AND after hearing RAVE reviews, I was anticipating a "finger-lickin'" experience. I took my 10 y.o. daughter, who's also a bbcue connoisseur, (we test dry rubs, marinates & sauces constantly) for her birthday, after seeing The Lion King, and we were extremely disappointed. The Kansas City sauce was bland, the brisket wasn't succulent and the sides were okay, at best. Even my drink, which was recommended as the special, was just "okay." My daughter and I follow bbcue circuits, etc. and am extremely "particular" about our bbcue. Therefore, if you step into this "arena" your game needs to be TIGHT & RIGHT! And Virgil's was not!
