Disappointed
I went to Virgil's a couple weeks ago. I wouldn't go back. I have had better barbecue elsewhere. Overpriced like everything in NYC.

Pretty good southern style BBQ
I am from the south and love good BBQ - ribs, pulled pork. This isn't as good as southern BBQ joints, IMHO, but hey, this is NYC. The pulled pork is good BUT they add sauce before hand - not the best. The ribs are excellent and you must try the chess pie for dessert - slice of chocolate and a slice of lemon - and eat together - yummm... The wait staff are nice and attentive. This is among the best BBQ in NYC. I have eaten here numberous times and Virgils is consistently good.

Loved the food!
Good thing we made reservations about 6 weeks in advance...the place was PACKED! The bbq was very good...my favorite items were the cornbread, corn on the cob and grilled flat dogs! I definitely want to go back the next time i visit NYC.

Excellent
Most of the ratings are negative, but they score high on food, service, etc. My opinion, Excellent! The smoked flavor from the wood makes it great.

Certainly the best BBQ in NYC
Having been all over the country sampling the local varieties of barbeque, i can say at least Virgil's brings GREAT barbeque to New York. Sure the place gets loud, crowded and it may take a while for your waitress, but you are in the theater district. There is practically no waiting time for the meal, and its consistantly delish...you gotta go.

Poor Food
A friend of mine recommended I try this restaurant while in NY. I ordered the fried chicken, greens, baked beans and macaroni & cheese. My guest ordered the ribs, cole slaw & potato salad. Neither of us enjoyed our meal. The fried chicken appeared to have been cooked earlier and dropped in the grease a second time just prior to bring it out. The potato salad had too much salt, the macaroni was dry and flavorless, the greens tasted like vinegar, and the ribs had a terrible flavor...possibly from the wood used to cook it.

Not terribly authentic in my opinion
They treat it more like a chain restaurant than what most bbq places try to be ( a simple sit down place with great food and little to no service/frills). The owners also operate the Italian eatery Carmines, which also takes a chain approach to Italian food and in my mind is not all that great unless all you really care about it the portion size. Will probably not be returning until i try so more of NYC's bbq spots to see what they have to offer.
