The best ever BBQ Ribs
Upon arrival in New York my Niece decided to take me & my wife our for Dinner and gave us some choices, I wanted to have BBQ, finally entered Virgils after a long Flight Journey from Paris, wow the BBQRIBS was the greatest I have had in my life. We then left New York after a few days and went to Panama and then upon return yo NY had visited Virgils for the Same menu---Ribs. I will make sure that whenver I visit NY I will make it a point to go back and get my best BBQ Ribs.

This native NYC'er loves Virgil's!
I don't understand the negative reviews. Especially the person who complained about getting too many hushpuppies per serving. HUH? Gee, and sorry if they're differently shaped than those you've gotten down south. The truth is every single thing on the menu is fantastic. Especially the hushpuppies with maple butter! Last time I was there with a group of friends from work, we all ordered extra hushpuppies and maple butter to take home. The staff was super kind, accommodating and efficient and the drinks were very, very generous (best bartenders in town here, btw). Even vegetarians love this place! Best grilled veggies and scrumptious sides here. The BBQ shrimp is to die for! Sure, it's a little pricey, but you get more than what you pay for! You will never go away hungry or dissatisfied unless you are very high maintenance or are used to eating like a linebacker.

what happened?
I've been eating here off and on for years and the last time I swore not to return.....but, I needed something quick and less expensive than all the other rip offs in times sq. area. This has become a less expensive rip off, but a rip nevertheless. Popcorn shrimp at 12.95; maybe 10 small fried pcs sitting on top of a small tub of popcorn, to make it look bigger! Had the chic/rib combo w/2 very sm sides.....3 ribs and a VERY SMALL 1/2 breast w/wing all for 23.95! Never again. I think it's become a typical tourist ripoff.

Great place
The food is great, we ordered the Virgil's pig out and it was a lot of food. We asked one plate for me and my husband and it was more than enough. Nice service and great place to have good beef and beer.

Not worth the Time or Cost
Cost was not in line with quality of food. Food was bland but expensive. Reserved a table was seated downstairs .....Tables were to cramped together.

Not Impressed
We ate at Virgil's a few years ago when we visited NYC last. It left an impression on us so we tried it last night when we were in the area again. This time it did not leave such a great impression. We ordered the hush puppy appetizer for $9.50 and were surprised when the plate arrived with 30ish hushpuppies for the 2 of us. They were not the round puppies we were used to in the south, but instead were like little sausage links. I do wish the server would have warned us at the overload of puppies for the two of us. Our entrees (pulled pork sandwich and meat platter) were ok. I think I was least impressed with the service. Our server did not speak English very well and we ended up with an extra side dish instead of the substitute side we had asked for. She also did not check on us very often for drink refills, etc. In short, I think we will not be putting Virgil's on our list next time we are in town. Too many other good restaurants to try!
