Tourist trap that use to be a great BBQ place.

What happened? Who bought this place? Cafeteria food supplier? Half of the stuff that use to be on the menu is gone and what's left is not that great, nowhere near to what it was back in the day. This place had fantastic hot dogs with chilly and a great appetizer sampler platter, all gone now. The food is bland and the meat itself is of poor quality. On my most recent visit and most likely last I saw a guy eating ribs with a knife and a fork. Sad, sad ... very sad.

Not What It Used To Be

Look, this is the theater district, where more tourists come to be fed and entertained than anywhere on earth. With the sky high rents and huge amount of people to be fed fast, don't expect great unless you're ready to pay large. Virgils, at say $40-50 for a meal is not high for NYC, but neither is the food better than trough food Service is fair at best as the place is jammed packed most of the time.Don't expect much attention and allow yourself an hour more than you planned to be seated and fed. Over the years the food quality was better than average for the district, but sadly, Virgil's best days are behind it.

    Good but expensive!

We are from the South, so it was silly to go for BBQ in NY! Food was good, but we only had 3 meals and the check was $90!

    Good greens

I've eaten a lot of the food on the menu and the collard greens are by far the best thing they have and I mean this in the most positive way. The rest of the food is good but not great.

    The best ever BBQ Ribs

Upon arrival in New York my Niece decided to take me & my wife our for Dinner and gave us some choices, I wanted to have BBQ, finally entered Virgils after a long Flight Journey from Paris, wow the BBQRIBS was the greatest I have had in my life. We then left New York after a few days and went to Panama and then upon return yo NY had visited Virgils for the Same menu---Ribs. I will make sure that whenver I visit NY I will make it a point to go back and get my best BBQ Ribs.

    This native NYC'er loves Virgil's!

I don't understand the negative reviews. Especially the person who complained about getting too many hushpuppies per serving. HUH? Gee, and sorry if they're differently shaped than those you've gotten down south. The truth is every single thing on the menu is fantastic. Especially the hushpuppies with maple butter! Last time I was there with a group of friends from work, we all ordered extra hushpuppies and maple butter to take home. The staff was super kind, accommodating and efficient and the drinks were very, very generous (best bartenders in town here, btw). Even vegetarians love this place! Best grilled veggies and scrumptious sides here. The BBQ shrimp is to die for! Sure, it's a little pricey, but you get more than what you pay for! You will never go away hungry or dissatisfied unless you are very high maintenance or are used to eating like a linebacker.
