OK
I had been to Virgil’s before with my wife and we now went with my two younger sons and something has definitely changed. The food was good but not outstanding like it used to be and portions were a lot smaller. Last time we were there I couldn’t think of finishing my meal as there was so much food but now there was not enough, the value is gone.

Summer breakfast
Holy cow. You get a ton of great food dirt cheap for breakfast! Not sure if they are just doing this for the summer or if its a permanent fixture. The pancakes with bacon are some of the best I've ever had. They also gave us a bunch of breakfast-style hushpuppies that were killer. The only issue seems to be service. Both times I've gone the wait staff seems to still be asleep!

What happened?
My girlfriend and I used to love this place. The portions were enormous ,the food quality was great and the service was fantastic. They've obviously changed owners and staff. Altering what was once great BBQ in NYC..

I'm Full
Took my son to Virgil's, he's the native Texan, I'm the transplant. Food was great, felt like home. The portions are huge, the service was spot on,(I think it was Linwood), and I liked the feel of the place. It was a great place to eat on the way to a matinee on Sunday. The sides are scary good.

i've never tried the meat..
Please disregard my review if you're a meat-lover, because I don't eat it (strange, I know) so I'm unable to review it...though my dining companions always say it's great. The fact that I love this BBQ place and I haven't tried any of their meat speaks wonders about their hush puppies, train wreck fires, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and, oh my god, the biscuits are a MUST! Bustling atmosphere, lots of tv's to watch sports on, the upstairs is nicer than downstairs, the waiters kind of drop the food and run (but I'm a New Yorker, so I just want my food, as opposed to tourists who seem to want a bit of conversation). TWO CAVEATS: The hostesses are either really bad at estimating time or are told to flat-out lie, because 30 minutes is actually 1-1 1/2 hours, 45 minutes means 2 hours, etc., and every time you ask when you'll be seated you're told, "5 more minutes". The food is good enough that I will wait 2 hours, but it's more professional to be upfront from the beginning. Also, a couple of times my party and I were brought all of our food- biscuits, apps, and entrees- at the same time. That's a lot of food for one sitting, and it's better spread out over time, especially because the entrees get cold when you're eating an appetizer and have to be sent back. The waiter is then making a separate trip with the entress anyway, and I wonder why he puts himself through the trouble.

Great location
Virgil's has a great location just off Times Square. There is nothing fancy about it. Lots of TVs to view sports. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It was good other than it had mustard cole slaw on it. If I ordered it again, I would order it without the cole slaw on top. The sandwich was large and plenty to eat. The best part of our meal was the homemade buttermilk biscuits as an appetizer. They were great. Great lunch place and great location. I probably won't go back though. There are other restaurants to try in New York and I don't get there often.

What Happened?
I was a FIXTURE at this place from day 1. My visits have become farther and fewer between. I recall each time saying I think this is my last visit here. I can get past the "drop and run " staff, it's the food I am after. Just...blah..... no HUGE issue or complaints, just Blah ( and a bit too pricey for that !) See ya...
