    What does it take?

This was our second visit to Victor's but first time with a reservation. Unfortunately we were seated at a table in the front room right next to the waiters station where I watched the action in & out of the kitchen. While I realize it was a Sat nite our reservation was made a week earlier & was for 5:30 & the place was busy but not full. Should we have slipped something to the hostess in order to get the garden room? In spite' the food didn't disappoint!

    Good food and great service

My friend and I went to Victor's for lunch before the 2pm showing of Sister Act. When we walked in, we were asked, "Do you have reservations?" of course I said "No." We were then told come on in and we were seated in what looked like the indoor courtyard with lots and lots of light. I had the signature dish with pulled beef in a plantain bowl which was good and my friend had Tappas, for dessert I had the flan and was that soooth, rich and divine. My friend raved about the coconut gelato. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and stayed nearby without hovering. I will definitely be back.

    Tasty, Lively, Great Time

My boyfriend and I ate here last night after a show. I had the chicken and rice; he had the vaca fritta (not sure I spelled that right). We shared (1) the shrimp and cheese tortillas as a starter, (2) the pork polenta as a side and (3) the guava crumble for dessert. I had a red sangria. Everything was delicious - the chicken was tender; the vaca fritta was crispy. The sangria was strong and flavorful. And the guava crumble was delicious - the vanilla ice cream was so creamy and the butter crumble on top was to die for. I cannot wait to go back here. (For 1 bottle of sparkling water, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 side, 1 dessert and 1 drink - the bill was roughly $100. Very reasonable.)

    Snotty Service

As we are living in the neighbourhood, we stopped by for lunch one weekend day. The host was really snotty and acted as if we had bothered him. We did not wore a suit, because it was a weekend and we lives in the neighbourhood. Although the decor and ambiance are nice, the food is overrated. We love Cuban food as we love a variety of International cuisines. This place is just disappointing.

In the mood for Victor's Cafe

I love this place but admit, a trip here will cost you dearly. This ain’t Restaurant Row, but it’s not far, just off the television studios and Theatre District that draw tourists by the double-decker busload. Why so costly? Well, what do you think they pay in rent for this location? A scaled down place by the same name used to serve good and reasonably priced Cuban cuisine uptown around W. 71st but that joint is no mas. Here you pay in part for the ambiance - the lighting, plants and open air décor - that aims to mimick old Havana, or at least Eighth Street, Miami. Suggest the Ropa Vieja (shredded skirt steak) or Lechón Asadó (roast suckling pig marinated in sour orange) as an entree. Appetizer: the red snapper Ceviche or Tamal De Maiz Tierno, a pork-filled corn tamale. Wanna save some digits? Try a Cuban sandwich. Better still, don’t drink here. Walk a block west to 9th Ave and get your sangria or mojito on in some nueva Hell’s Kitchen taberna before or after dinner. Miki Matos Vega

    Very good; would go back

My friend and I had the ropa vieja and chimichurri skirt steak. Both were excellent and perfectly-cooked. My pina colada was very good as well. Not cheap and the portions were not large, but the quality was high. I would go back.
