Gracie's Diner (fka Viand)
Posted by Joe on 07/08/2006
Eat at Viand. It's an awkward name for a diner (vee-and?), but the food can't be beat. Don't get me wrong: it's nothing more than your standard diner fare. But when it comes to speedy service with a smile, and a tasty, fairly-priced meal, Viand's got it in spades. I read another review that raved about their grilled cheese. I couldn't agree more. Also, they serve a lemonade drinks like a dessert, and their coffee and pie make a great combination. I'd stay clear of the last page of the menu. The entrees tend to get a bit over-priced for what they're worth. So just stick to the basics. Whether you're coming home from a late night out or you want a solid breakfast to start your day, Viand's the place.

I agree with a previous reviewer in saying that the grilled cheese is exceptional! I've never had one from a diner (or any place for that matter) that had it as perfect as Viand. Not too much butter, perfect amount of toasted and it didn't come out soggy at all. Can't vouch for anything else but I would definitely go back for the grilled cheese.

Viand The Best? Exactly which Viand are you talking about? I have lived across the street from Viand - before there WAS a Viand. It certainly was very good; large portions, reasonable prices, a Greek diner for sure. I ate there three to four times a week for years. Now Viand is in new hands. To paraphrase the old Woody Allen line; 'The food is not good and the portions are small". The cost of a rather questionable meal has gone up quite a bit over this past year. As for ambience, there is none.

I ordered for delivery when placing the order I spoke to 2 people 2 different times. Then it took an hour for my order to arrive. Once it arrived they forgot to put the gravy in for my fries. The food was good nothing super special. Also I charged it and they didn't tell me that tips were cash only.

If you live in the 80's near 2nd Ave and haven't eaten here than you are not a local. I have worked in upscale restaurants for almost 10 years, and I have to say that when I am out for a bite to eat, I would rather go here than anywhere else. This is the best diner on the UES. In terms of diners....this is the best food and service. The portions are healthy and the service is friendly and fast. As far as comfort goes...well.......what do you expect.....its a NYC DINER....
