    New Age Italian

All establishments can have their off days with regards to service, food, and even atmosphere. Not making this a habit is what will separate the greats from the average to the unbearable. I will assume that any bad review of VESPA is one of those rare off days. Vespa is in the heart of the upper east side where many of NYC's youth engage in drinking and bar hopping. Vespa fits right in to that aspect of the city's nightlife while also adding a sense of class unseen from the street. On many a night Vespa will have a DJ (which not one person mentioned so makes me wonder if they even went into the restaurant) to counter that is of course the beautiful courtyard in the back which is constantly being upgraded to enhance the atmosphere. (Check out the courtyard during the holidays to understand) The food is very selective. Almost every dish is superb. The menu changes with the seasons so your favorite dish might be there in the winter as apposed to the summer. The service is young and respectful but like any staff could always be in need of improvement. To say Vespa is the top Italian restraint in Manhattan would be pushing it. But this is only do to being around barely 2 years. What I will say is that in do time and experience of this new age Italian establishment,

    Below Average

I tried Vespa twice, because it looks so cute from the outside, and the courtyard is admittedly beautiful. However, the food is below average for the UES, for prices that leave much to be desired. The first time I went, my friends was served an unpalatable dish of barely cooked pasta, and my dish was puny and average tasting for the $22 pricetag. Second time I went just to sit at a nice courtyard with a friend, I vowed not to return. The service was subpar. The food took a while to arrive, and the complimentary bread never showed up, though we asked for it THREE times. The waiter was rude, and we walked out hungrier (and poorer than when we came in).

    Only Appetizers!

The atmosphere at Vespa is wonderful. They have great artwork on the walls and vintage cameras. Four of us sat at in the lovely garden area at the back of the restaurant. I have to say the service was a bit slow. Cocktails came on time but the appetizers took awhile. All four of us loved the appetizers.. I had the seared scallops and they were lovely, my guest loved the octopus and calamari appetizer. We were all disappointed with our dinner. My pasta had 'shavings' of sausage... very average dish cetainly not worth the money. If you are ordering a main dish go for the second plate.. the pasta dishes are just not up to par. We had two bottles of wine with our meal and both wines were good. Dessert was good nothing special. The atmosphere however was nice. I would go again but order one glass of wine and two appetizers for dinner!

    Great!

Went for a late dinner Saturday...delicious! Had veal with a marsala sauce and sauteed spinach. Great service, the outside patio in back was wonderful, outdoor dining without the street chaos. Definitely will go back!

    Love this place

I've eaten here a few times. Contrary to the guy below, I've sat at the bar and in the dining room and had good experiences with the service. The staff is actually really nice and will chat away if they have time. (I can think of much snobbier places). About the food, it's been consistently good. We love the cold appetizer sampler which includes many choices. The cavatappi, though a little heavy for summer is amazing. Also, the gnocchi will melt in your mouth (better than Babbo's I feel). We also love the balsamic chicken and skirt steak. For dessert you should try the pear tart and the dessert wine sampler. Soo good. Try to sit in the garden, there's nothing like it on the UESide!

    Good Food, Rude Service

We've eaten here several times but won't return because of the rude service we endured last night. Our meal was consumed at the bar and was tasty. The bartender/waitress was extremely slow, but that was not the problem. One of the waiters came over to take our credit card and when the bartender/waitress came over, she also asked us to pay the bill. When we told her that a man had taken away our charge card, she became nasty, as though it were our fault. The service at Vespa is expert at giving attitude and the clientele now tends toward the Bridge and Tunnel crowd, wannabe Upper East Siders. That's the problem when a restaurant becomes popular. When we complained to the manager about the waitress, he defended her. Meanwhile, this is the first time we left a "zero" for the tip.

    Excellent

What more to say? Great atmosphere, fun with friends, great night out. Great food, service, attention. Don't be fooled by people that only see the negative side of things. You won't be disappointed.
