A must try on the UES

I love going to Vespa with my girlfriends..Everytime we come there, they greet us like we are family....Their staff is so friendly and helpful when I bring new people to the restaurant......Anyone who goes needs to try there cavatelli or duck breast, its to die for.....I also love how they change up the menu every season it give me the chance to try new menu options....The atmosphere to so much fun with the occasional dj spinning and when the garden open I will be there almost every weekend... They also have a Wine Bar down the block and I tend to stop by everytime I want a small bite or to drink some wine...

    Highly overrated (and overpriced)

I've been to Vespa before, and it's always been adequate (but never my favorite). Last night, however, it lost major points. The service was very poor. Our server took our order and then disappeared or rather, he decided to pass by my boyfriend and I repeatedly while he beelined for the 3 tables full of 20-something girls sitting around us. Even trying to flag him down didn't work. We would have kept ordering (seriously overpriced!) drinks, but instead we only got one round because he never came back. (I gave it half a star only because the water boy kept us seriously hydrated. If we could have given him the tip instead of the server, we would have). I ordered the tasting menu and was disappointed. The tuna on the artichoke hearts came out of a can (I was expecting seared, or at least tuna steak, but, no, it appeared to be out of a can) and the smoked trout was laden with bones. And everything was lukewarm to cold...certainly not what I was expecting. Also, what used to be a relaxed and inviting atmosphere seems to have turned into a poor excuse for a nightclub with food and no dancing. It was just loud and obnoxious, and actually put us in a bad mood.

    Favorite restaurant on the UES

I had to write a review when I saw someone criticize the gnocci. It is flawless and that person has issues. This restaurant is hands down one of my favorites and I am a serious foodie. Also a huge fan of the squash blossom appetizers and my father would kill for their lasagna. Always a crowd pleaser. Love this place.

Hubby and I are kicking ourselves. We have lived in this neighborhood for five years and only just tried Vespa. I can't believe this gem has been right around us the whole time! The food and wine were wonderful, and we have no problems getting a table on a Friday night. We adored the squash blossoms appetizer and my sweet potato pasta was divine. We'll be back. Pronto.

    Not recommended

I have heard mixed reviews on Vespa and figured I would give it a try...every place is worth a shot. I dined at Vespa last night with some friends. We had to wait a 1/2 hour to be seated. I ordered Pennette (pasta, eggplant, mozzarella, and sauce). They screwed my meal up 5 times. By the time they got it right I found the sauce to be extremely spicy and it tasted as if it had come out of a can. My friend ordered tuna and asked for it to be rare. It came out well done. The staff was extremely rude and I found our waiter's sarcastic personality to be nothing but obnoxious. The atmosphere is definitely “slightly off” and the tables are on top of one another. The walls are covered with weird collages that one could make. The funny part is the restaurant is selling these so called works of art for $250 a pop.

    Just slightly off

Dont get me wrong, this place has pretty good food and drinks. And the atmosphere is kind of kitschy with oversized movie posters and menus on a clipboard. However, there is just something about this place that is just slightly off. The food could be just a little bit more flavorful or perhaps a little bit more committed to being any ethnic style. The food isnt particularly french, italian, ethopian, or innuit eskimoan. Its just oddly prepared food with a mix of meats and sides that are trying so hard to be unique that they seem almost mismatched. The mixed drinks are decent but they are just a little off. Maybe its too much flavor mix and not enough reliance on the flavor of the spirits, but something about them could be tweaked to make them just right. As for the atmosphere, again, just a little off. The tables are nice sized, but a little too tall or short for the chairs. And while its a large restaurant, you sit just a hair too close to other patrons. Overall, the food is palatable and its a sort of different experience, but much like a Wes Anderson movie, you leave feeling like you missed some inside joke that everyone else was in on.

    A-for adorable!

This place is beyond cute, went there for dinner last night. Cocktails and food were all around A+. I will definitely be back and can't wait to eat in the garden.
