    my boy is hooked

ate there last wk with my son and we loved it - sat at the bar and the food came out fast. the service was amazing and the waiters were friendly...so much so that my wife is taking both of my boys there tonight again. the food was fresh and tasty !

    Good, not great

The best things about this place are the beautiful roomy dining room and off the beaten path location. A reservation for 10 on a Friday night was a breeze. Because the place was half empty, we were able to hang out long after dinner was done. Which is too bad, the place should get more business. The food is very good and portions generous. It is overpriced for Vietnamese. But I'd rather pay more for ambience and quality, rather than go to one of those stark and dirty places in Chinatown. My one major beef is the bartender. I ordered a $11 cocktail that was supposed to be made with cointreau, according to the menu. But I caught the bartender trying to substitute Bols, a cheap gross triple sec instead. When I called him out, he acted like he had no idea there was a difference between a $45 bottle of cointreau and a $7 bottle of Bols. Also, almost every cocktail we tasted was pretty bad. Order beer, wine or a straight drink instead and be sure to call your liquor.

    great shrimp cakes

Viet Cafe is consistently good. The shrimp cakes are excellent when they have them. Otherwise the vegetarian crab cakes are good too . The Pho Ga is really good. So is the chicken stew. Nice Tribeca restaurant with an art gallery attached.

    The best

I love asian food. I eat in chinatown at least once a week. I eat asian food at least 5 times a week. Viet Cafe has the best chicken soup i have had in the city; better than matsouri, rivaling 2nd avenue deli. their mini spring rolls are excellent, the veggie pot is awesome. in fact i have never had a bad dish. its a little quiet there so its not a hot spot, but the food is excellent

    Long Delivery Waits

Extremely long waits for delivery orders. Management seems to have a poor handle on the operation of the restaurant.

    Terrific place!

I have been coming here for the past 2 years and have always enjoyed the food, ambiance and service. As someone Vietnamese living in New York, finding a place that serves good food that isn't Chinatown quality can be hard. While the prices may not match that of most restaurants in Chinatown, I would willing pay it for the service and area that it is in. On a side note, in response to past reviews about lateness in deliveries, I can understand the frustration, but having some of my friends in the restaurant industry, I see how difficult it is to please everyone all the time under all situations. So for those you, like the most recent reviewer, if you live close by to a restaurant, why not instead pick-up the food rather than constantly order it to be delivered and then get mad. I for one think that if I like a place enough, I would be more patient.

    Poor service & overpriced

Although I agree it is nice to have food delivered that doesn't sit heavily in my stomach until the next morning - the poor service, consistent problematic deliveries & way-too-high-prices at VietCafé do not make up for the fact that my stomach is somewhat pleased by a nice Roasted Sesame Beef. My brain keeps thinking - how and why did I just pay $22 for that? And why- when the container is spilled all over the bottom of the bag (on more than one occasion) and my drinks were paid for and never received did the manager not offer to refund any money? In fact he seemed kind of bothered by the fact that I was calling. I remember last time I called him was an all too familiar situation. I wonder if he remembers that... I have never received a delivery that came faster than 1 hour (and the place is only 4 blocks away). In fact tonight, as I am writing this, I am still waiting (2 hours and 10 minutes later) for my drinks to arrive. I have decided that tonight was the last time I will have to trouble Viet Café to make the long trek all the way to my house for poor service, spilled and missing expensive food. Somehow I don't think they will notice I am not calling anymore.
