The Vatan experience didn't quite cut it for me. For openners, the food is pricey to be merely passable, and the service is mediocre even by New York standards. But what made the forgettable experience so memorable was being asked to leave as the meal was winding down. Wow! In all my years of dining out in New York City, this was my first time being asked to leave while there was still food on my plate because someone else waiting for the table. My advice for those seeking Indian cuisine is to walk a block west to Lexington Avenue. You'll find a wide selection, and you surely won't be asked to leave in mid-chew.

Dining out should be relaxing, a time to unwind with good friends, good food, and good drink. That's what we pay the premium for when we seek out a fine restaurant. Apparently there is disagreement concerning this very basic formula within the management at Vatan, where there is a strict time limit on your stay--one hour, thirty minutes. The atmosphere here is not redolent of Gujarat, but more like that of Stalin's Russia. Make no mistake about it, you will be asked to leave when your stay is up. But the check...ah, the check...now that comes promptly. There are too many authentic Indian restaurants in NYC to pay a premium for what Vatan considers service. Stay far away.

You'll find a great meal- authentic food from the Gujrat region of India. It's all-vegetarian fare, but even meat lovers will enjoy this hearty repast. Go hungry cause you can take unlimited helpings...pace yourselves because even though the first course is scrumptious save space for the later courses too. The service is bafflingly annoying- the servers (the women esp) are full of needless attitude which is better left elsewhere. Ignore it, just focus on the food! Yum yum. By the way- Vatan has the only all-female kitchens- go lady chefs!!!

I consider myself a pretty big Indian food fan, but I have never had food like this before. It was the most authentic, delicious Indian I have ever had, I cannot say enough about it. I love the prix fix menu because it lets you try so many different dishes, the decor is very cool, and I found the waitresses to be very accomodating. I would highly recommend this place, I can't wait to go back!

I went here with a few friends over the weekend. The setting is phenomenal, excellent gujarati food, and the service could use a little more improvement. I will definately go back.

So much food!! Interesting and varied selection of authentic indian dishes. The seating is fine if you're on a date because you can get cozy but it does get a little uncomfortable afterwards. When the dishes are good, they're great, but some just tasted off... I will definitely come back, knowing better what to eat the full portion of and what to skip.
