I recently went to Vatan. I can this same quality food on 38th street and sixth avenue at $8.00. It is just hyped. Service is not good at all. The servers asked to pass on plates and food even though they were able to easily reach us from all angles. The worst server handed me boiling hot bowl without caution. Dont go unless you want to be disappointed and fight for service.

Vatan used to be a favorite for a romantic, if pricy, dinner. I thought it would be a great choice for my boyfriend's birthday, with his whole family. What an embarassing mistake! They put us downstairs in an ugly florescent lit cave, which was at least well cooled. As the room filled up, the bad acoustics made conversation almost impossible. This added to the agony of a very long night -- long because the service was basically MIA. It took 45 minutes from sitting down just to receive our drinks. The food was never the best Indian in town (one went for the ambience, service, and fun, menuless experience), and I think it has gone downhill. One or two things were tasty, but it was mainly tepid, gluey, and flavorless. The portions are tiny. Sure, you can still ask for more of anything you want, but just try to find a waitress. Finally the bill -- $60/person (with drinks -- not too many drinks). Service is already included of course, just to add insult to injury. I complained about how awfully things had gone, and they apologized that it was very busy (on Saturday night? What a surprise! Who could have prepared for that?). This review is my sincere attempt to help them with their tragic problem of having too many customers.

Vatan was amazing and we went recently for the first time and were pleasantly astonished with the ambience. It is remarkable and quite unique. Definitely a must visit place. We dined at the main level and there are three levels. The main level is very well spaced and great. The other levels are also unique and good but it is more for group parties. The menu has a wide variety and definitely fills anyone's appetite. The taste was very good with the appetizers but not so great with the main entrees. Still there is room to improve the entree items. I would call the price to be a little expensive but definitely a good place to try once. The basement has a unique Ajanta Elora cave setup and could make a few people claustrophobic. Sundays are better than Sat or Friday as it is less crowded. I should appreciate the friendly waiters and waitresses. They patiently explain all the items and also talk very pleasingly. You hardly find such charming and good people to take care of you in Indian restaurants.

Gone are the days when you could swear by its name. stay hungry but dont accept the basement sitting coz ambiance is gloomy and service is bad. Also they had a party of some 20+ people so it was very noisy. P R I C E Y. (seems like you are paying for the renovations) I have been too Vatan quite a few times (before renovations )and I feel that the harmony is lost somewhere.

no matter what, do not agree for a table in the basement. It is their post-renovation setup and it's not good at all. They should have rather made a lounge out of the basement, as opposed to additional seating space. Food was decent, as always, however, for the 18% included gratuity, it is a little pricey.

This was first visit after the renovations. I liked the renovations and as always the food quality was good and worth the $. (No complaints about the service) Some tips for an enjoyable experience ... + Make reservations. We had been there on sat evening and there were two time slots - 6.30pm and 8.30pm. If you would like to sit under the tree, please arrive on-time. Also that gives you enough time to leisurely enjoy all the courses. Given that you can eat all you want ... sufficient time is an important aspect. + Contrary to my previous experience, the mango pulp is now on request. So don't forget to request it with your main course if 'aam rus' is something you take delight in. Hope you too have a enjoyable experience.
