Pricey and Just OK
Food was pricey- but that was expected. Service and Desserts were good.. but that's about it. The food was just OK and the atmosphere was a bit 'old' and uppity. I wouldn't go back.

Lunch at Union Square Cafe
Had always wanted to dine here. Made reservations for lunch, and we were seated about 15 minutes later..Atmosphere okay, but not all that unique..Calamari was delicious, scallops good, chocolate cake delicious...Waitstaff helpful, but our particular waiter not what would be called, "warm", personality-wise...Not that I have to have that ,but he was not particularly friendly, just efficient..Expensive, of course, but I had expected that...The people at the bar seemed to be having fun...I liked this restaurant, but with so many great places in NY, not sure that I would make a huge point of returning....Possibly dinner would be a more special experience, as dinner usually is.....

What a wonderful dining experience
We celebrated my birthday dinner here last night and I can't say enough nice things about it. The server was aware it was my birthday and brought out not one, but two complementary side dishes w/ our entrees. He made sure our wine was the right temperature and never rushed us. The gnocchi and the risotto were our starters and both delicious, the cheese in the risotto along w/ the apples provides this unique tangy experience for your tastebuds. The lamb chops melt in your mouth, perfectly seasoned. Great wine list with several good selections for any price range. We experienced the most professional service I think I've experienced in the city. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Excellent Food and Service, but....
I've been trying to get reservations here for some time, always with no luck. Finally, during the blizzard I was able to sneak in last minute. I'm glad I did, but I'm not sure everything quite lived up to the hype - in a wierd kind of way. The food was excellent. My wife and I both had the pork porterhouse special which was moist and came with a wonderful sauce. Our appetizer was a butternut squash ravioli that was also fabulous. Dessert was a warm banana extravaganza that was great. We even through in a quick order of the home-made garlic potato chips - they were awesome. The wine list was only OK in my opinion - it could have used some better values. However, there was certainly enough to choose from in the list, especailly from international producers. As for service, it too was excellent. We were helped by several different wait staff who were all very friendly. So why my slight disappointment? I think it stems from the fact that I waited so long to get in. Yes, the food and service were great, but I didn't feel special really in any way. And yeah, it's New York, and yeah they have a great reputation, but I still feel I deserve to feel special when I'm dropping $200 - $250 for anything that only takes 2 hours. The atmosphere is nothing memorable - not trendy or romantic. If you are only after good food, this place is terrific. However, if you much prefer an entire experience when you dine, you may opt not to go crazy over reservations here and instead look elsewhere. I guess the bottom line is that it was cool to eat there, but I wouldn't call it a "must-do" in NYC.

Wonderful Time
We wre there in October, 2005. We enjoyed sitting at the bar prior to being seated for dinner. The staff was affable and the dinner and dessert excellent. Oops, almost forgot great drinks!! This is on our list of favorite restaurants. Thank you.

Favorite restaurant!
I brought my dad here when he was visiting and we loved it! Great atmosphere, generous portions (though pricey), a wide selection of foods. I definitely recommend the sides of mashed sweet potatoes and roasted onions.

Overrated and too expensive
Quite simply, the food was not that good. Great wine, service, and atmosphere... but not worth the exorbitant prices.
