....as is the restaurant as a whole. I used to go for dinner because that was the harder reservation to get (and therefore better?) but weekend nights always felt harried and overblown. Now I go for the last lunch sitting, round 1:45 or 2:00 and it's just wonderful. The place is clearing out, the staff isn't going anywhere and they have a breather, the food is, as always, superb, you can take your time and then just have a snack for dinner later. Plus the tuna is on the lunch menu. USC's front of the house staff and waitstaff is simply superb, genuine, kind, attentive. Still hard to replace this one on anyone's list of favorites.

I went during restaurant week on a friend's recommendation of their burgers, so I was a little surprised that the "cafe" turned out to be a classy restaurant. The burger turned out to be a little disappointing (overcooked), but the duck confit was amazing and the tropical fruit cheesecake was also delicious. At first, the staff struck me as pretentious (they asked my gf and I if we wanted "sodas" and whether we were there for "a special occasion"), but our waiter turned out to be very sweet and brought us a free dessert. I'd go again!

I've just went there yesterday (1/26) for the Restaurant Week lunch. The menu contains 4 choices per course. I've tried the risotto (to die for!), the sauteed skate with polenta (pretty good) and the baked apple (not too bad); they gave me an extra dessert, the chocolate chip cupcake with ganache because they've mistaken my dessert order. The cupcake that I've just mentioned, I was not too happy with. It was too dense, a bit dry and bland. The only thing that could keep it moist was the very few drops of chocolate sauce and the ganache is the only thing that could balance the sweetness into it. I would go back there again, but I don't want those desserts if I had a choice.

I was just at Union Sq Cafe on 1/15/05 for my birthday celebration. Have been before, and it is a wonderful place, but was a tad disappointed. Did not feel that the service was up to par, and thought that my $26.00 seafood stew could have had more than 1 shrimp! It is a pricey place so was expecting a little more. However, the calamari was the best I have ever had, and the baked alaska was amazing. Would recommend, but I was personally disappointed.

This was my first time here, and I enjoyed it immensely. I would love to come back. Service was fine, not obtrusive. Food was great -- I came for lunch; my next goal is to make it here for dinner. Calamari was perfect, and my fettucine tartufo was simple and sublime. Desserts are amazing. If you get a chance to try the cappucino panna cotta, don't miss it. It's silky and luscious and accompanied by the most moist espresso cake. It's no wonder why USC has survived almost 20 years in ever-changing NYC -- successfully no less! Reservations are a must. Great for a business lunch or a place to take relatives.

Food and service were great ... save room for dessert .. the baked alaska is a must .. best I've ever had.
