This is the best sushi I've had in the city at this price level. It's best for take out or delivery though, not much/very nice seating area. I'm not sure what the guy means by "pureed" but it's sushi just like any other sushi I've had in the city and definitely the best at this price level.

Just tried this place based on the glowing reviews. It was a mistake. The maki rolls seemed to have pureed fish inside. The resulting texture and taste are not good. The mango shrimp roll is nothing special either.

I fully agree with the previous reviewer. If you're looking for amazing, generously-sized maki rolls, this is the place to go. I've never had any nigiri sushi at Umi - I always just get one of four rolls: Sleeping Beauty, Mississippi, Gunpowder, or spicy scallop [instead of shrimp] mango. They are simply fantastic, and the price-value relationship is far superior to most other restaurants in Manhattan. And yes, the place has no atmosphere, but the staff is super-friendly, especially the manager.

Let me say that I've been to every Sushi joint in the city - Nobu, Sushi Samba, Haru, Yama. There isn't a better sushi joint in the city. The quality, the price, the service. The cuts are fresh, thick and big. The rolls are very creative, very colorful, very delicious. The wait staff is very friendly. I eat here for lunch and dinner. The space is kinda tight but hey, it's NY. Highly recommended.

I order from here at least twice a week. Always fresh, always great. Highly recommended. Sleeping beauty roll!

We've picked up sushi from here a few times and have never been disappointed. The quality and price can't be beat. There are only a few tables in the restaurant and the ambience leaves a lot to be desired, but you truly can't beat the taste and savings!

Extremely consistent, delicious sushi at great prices. Get the shrimp mango roll! The sushi is actually not all made with pureed fish as someone on this site said -- it depends on the sushi chef each night. Sometimes the rolls are shredded fish and sometimes they are large pieces -- they are always from top-quality fish, though, and supremely fresh and tasty! Delivery is always under half an hour and I've never gotten a wrong order (and I order maybe 3 times a week). It's honestly the best sushi value I know of, and the sushi is better than Tomoe or Yama or the other much-touted places.
