Townhouse Restaurant & Diner
Posted by anaonymous on 10/22/2013
I have frequented this diner since it opened. Steve (the nice brother) is very charming. The food is good quality diner fare but the prices are a bit ridiculous for a diner. It is rather cramped which is especially apparent in the afternoons when it becomes a convention for bombastic bus drivers.

I thought I had walked into David Burke's. Seriously, the prices are quite completely insane. 2 eggs = $6.45 steak & eggs = $20.45 veal marsala = $19.45 Problem with the Townhouse is it fancies itself as a fine dining restaurant, with prices to boot. But it's just a diner. Maybe a tad better than some, but just a diner. Who would pay more tha $20 for a bland steak and eggs? This isn't Peter Lugar's. And what about almost $20 for a veal dish here? This isn't Il Mulino for God's sake! This used to be a good, solid place to eat, but those days are long gone. You have to be crazy to recommend this place. And crazier still to frequent it.

Sure the owners and warm and friendly, and the food is a cut above a regular diner. . . But the prices are OUTRAGEOUS. I've been going here for 18 years, but they've just lost me as a customer. The reason? Two eggs on an English muffin and a large coffee. The price was $7.60?! Gimme a break!

We were referred to this restaurant by the concierge at the Hilton on 42nd St. A short walk away, we were very happy with the atmosphere, service was great, and food was good. We probably ate there a total of 5 times during our 6 day stay, and the staff knew us on the 2nd time through the door. It's very clean, not chic, but has a pleasant nice atmosphere. Extensive menu, lots of choice. If you're visiting NYC, definitely worthwhile checking out.

Townhouse is absolutely my favorite diner in NYC. They treat me like family, remember my regular order, and always greet me like I'm an old friend. Walking into the Townhouse is usually the highlight of my day on Saturday and Sunday mornings. And having compared their egg and cheese sandwiches to all the other local joints, theirs is always the best. Highly recommended.
