many people will go to tom's thinking it's 'monk's diner' from seinfeld. you'll surely be disappointed. other than the shakes, the fries and an occasional burger, you'd be better off going to a real diner or deli. the food does bring to mind the episode of seinfeld (the betrayal) where george is eating at monk's with jerry and decides on getting the clams casino (chef recommends!) and claims afterwards that 'they taste a bit funky.' jerry responds by saying: 'i'm sure they're fine.' that pretty much sums up the dining/decor/service & value of tom's. both the staff and many of the elderly patrons are an eye-sore. and the staff could use a little work on both hygene and demeanor.

Tom's is a great causal diner. It's great if you want to grab a cheap bite to eat. Don't go into Tom's expecting something really spectacular, but go in with an open mind. The food, is on the better side of good, and i have never had trouble with the staff. If your a rick columbia kid, than don't go...you'll be severely disapioned, :)

Ok, I admit the food is generally decent, nothing special, the staff is rude, the tourists annoying. BUT if you are a drunk Columbia student and its 3 in the morning, nothing is better!

The food may be no good, but I assure you that this is the subject of the famous Suzanne Vega song. She was a Columbia student. She personally describes her inspiration for the song on her website. I may be missing something, but I wouldn't call her 1982 song an endorsemnt of the place even then. In fact, it laments the bad service.
