As stated in an earlier review, this compares directly to the chain diners of the west coast, and Toms wins on all counts. Better than average food, better than average prices, service people seemed a little strange, but hey half of NY people seem a little strange to me, hehe. The interior has quite a few Seinfeld posters, which I find to neither be a pro or con. In contrast to the west coast counterparts, this is one place you can actually get an egg salad sandwich....

I must say that Tom's is better than I expected. Where else can you get what you want whenever you want it, 24 hours a day. Its a Diner! Great nostalgic feel of eating at the famous "Seinfeld Diner". I had the garden supreme veggie burger which was great and the milk shake was off the hook! The prices were very decent. Thumbs up!Maybe the tourists are expecting fancy fusion cuisine...well this is good old New York City Diner! Enjoy.

i'm not sure why people are giving tom's a critical review.. it's a diner, what can you really expect? the milkshakes are the very best i have ever had and definitely enough to share with someone else. the fries are really good as well. this place is packed in the wee hours of the morning with columbia students who have serious munchies and that makes it hilarious.

I live locally and, as I had a day off work, decided to pop in there. After directing me to a table which was already occupied, I was sent to a table designed for two. This sent the waiter into a mild panic. "No, no, no,"he called to me, as though I was about to stuff a signed Picasso sketch into my back pocket. "We can't have singles." I stood up, expecting to be pointed to the counter. But he repeated - and I'm assuming he was unaware of my marital status - "no singles, no singles." So I left and spent my money elsewhere. Bad service is one thing, bizarre service quite something else. Were the food exceptional, I might have volunteered to sit at the counter, but, as others here have pointed out, it's unremarkable. Anyway, they won't be seeing me again.

Coming from the West Coast, I would compare Tom's to my local IHOP or Dennys and say that Tom's comes out on top. Fair prices, great hours for those dining late on a budget in Morningside Heights, friendly service and food that reminds me of although albeit not fancy, home cooked meals. Only beware: they are cash only. Stop at an ATM if you need to prior to coming in.

...but its just a diner that serves diner food at cheap prices, considering it's manhattan. people expect some amazing meal because its facade was featured on seinfeld, and the others knock it because they are apparently too cool.

NOTE: The milkshakes here are totally legit. Go for the coffee or the cherry--they can't be beat. Otherwise, the only thing going for Tom's is its facade, made famous by Seinfeld. It's a plain old NYC diner: overpriced, little character, and mediocre food.
