Great fish but pricey
I'm pregnant and have been craving sushi for the past 4 months, and this is the only place I trust enough to actually take a risk on. Actually, there was no risk at all - we had dinner here last night and as always the fish was topnotch and super-fresh. It is expensive, even for sushi ($50 for 3 rolls and 3 pieces of nigiri, no drinks except for the green tea that comes gratis) but worth the splurge.

Disappointed
We had always seen people waiting so we stopped by for lunch today because our usual place was closed. We were terribly dissapointed. The food was mediocre and over priced (even for that area) and it was served in a restaurant that was cramped and not all that clean. I was a little disturbed to have our sushi served to us on wooden trays (with cracks and crevices) that tend to absorb bacteria. While the waitress was pleasant enough when dealing with us, we watched her treat incoming customers poorly, as though they were fortunate for even being allowed to eat there. We will not be going back.

The Party's over at Tomoe!
Tomoe was my place going back SO many years. Sadly, Ken, the main chef went away to start another venue. The place slipped badly. He came back to salvage it, but the quality isn't there anymore, they raised the prices and the decor is still as scary as ever.If anything they still give a huge piece, but the tuna is full of striations of muscle. What little variation they ever had is now reduced to very few fish. It's sad to watch such a decline. In the 90's and some 80's it was a huge value. Even my old friend, one of the servers, gives me an apologetic look, expressing how he knows it ain't what once it was. If Ken didn't cut your fish it's a mess, because the two other guys at the bar are not very adept. Anyway, I hope Ken goes back to the old model, instead of jacking up the price to gouge the walk-bys who come in. The old regulars have moved on!

What the hell happened ???!!!
I can only side with my fellow menupages commenters. The first time I went to Tomoe was in 2003. Back then, no complaint: excellent food, moderate prices, normal to big sized portions. Went back then in 2005: the food's quality started to be inconsistent, the portions had started to shrink, and the price rose by 20-40%. Now, in 2007, it's still the same crampy place that one just cannot accept for the price paid. Man, their Spicy tuna roll is 7,75USD ! The tekka don 30 ! The salmon sashimi or sushi piece is 4.75 (was 3.5 two years ago) !!! More expensive than the likes of (the much more upscale) sushi of gari and comparable. Have they just gone mad? We paid a little over a hundred fourty (and ordered nothing fancy) for two. We won't be back, sorry tomoe. Your customers are just not walking wallets.

What Happened!?
I used to be obsessed with Tomoe. I have eaten there for the last 5 yrs and have never been dissapointed until my last visit. They used to give huge chunks of fish- now the pieces are at least 35% smaller. A huge difference! Especially since they have jacked the prices up. Understandable if the quality and size of the pieces remained the same. But the quality of the fish has gone down(the Maguro was tough and flavorless) Although the Yellotail and toro was still delicious. Bring back the big chunks of fish that I love!

Why the lines at all?
After a long time passing by and thinking that if people would stand in a line for food it must be delicious, my husband and I finally went last week. We love Japanese food and have tried just about any round the City, but we totally did not understand why anybody would waste a second standing in the line to get to this place! The servings were small, prices almost as high as at much better places (serving more food for the same amount), and the atmosphere definitely sucks. We had to rub elbows with people around us because it is so crowded and small inside.

Downhill
I agree, this place has definitely gone down hill. It used to be affordable and absolutely delicious, hence the long lines, but then they pulled up the prices thinking they were so great and now it's just your standard sushi place but WAY over priced and small portions! no long lines anymore either. does them good. go somewhere else and save your money.
