The Stanton Social
Posted by Very Average on 03/13/2007
I came here with a group of girlfriends for dinner (with reservations) and we were stuck in a small round table near the back. We asked if we could sit upstairs and were told that there were no tables available except the small table in the back. The food wasn't bad, but overpriced for the portion of food that they give. Our favorite was the Kobe burger, but that was overpriced too for 2 tiny bites. I've been here a few times before and the service was much better when you come with a small group of 2-4. When the party gets larger, they really try to rush you and get you out of there as soon as possible. The music was a bit on the loud side and people kept on brushing up on people on our table since it was such a tight squeeze. The decor was nice, but I highly doubt we'll be returning any time soon. I always say give a place a chance. Only go if you're planning on going with 2-3 other people), but don't go with a group. Be prepared to spend $60+/per person, if you drink.

I ate here last Friday with my husband. Some items were very good - like the onion soup dumplings and the kobe sliders. Most items, though, were very average - like the chicken mole, shrimp, and snapper tacos. Its interesting to be able to go to a place and try lots of different things - but the Stanton Social should focus on making less items that taste better instead of trying to have such a huge menu. Also - the music was way too loud - I couldn't hear anything - definitely not the type of place to go with a large group, because you won't be able to hear anyone across from you, or a place to go if you're looking for a romantic dinner. The service is very attentive - however I found it distracting. Waitstaff is constantly buzzing around the room checking on your table - but it made me feel rushed - they'd come out with a new plate of food (food comes out from the kitchen in a continuous stream as opposed to all at once), and, since the tables are so small, you're forced to remove the last items from the communal plate to your own plate to make room for the new dish. Either the tables need to be bigger, serving dishes smaller (since the portions are small no need for such large plates), or the staff needs to be more patient. I think there's a lot of potential with a place like this - but, for my husband and I, Stanton Social just misses the mark on too many things. Will not return...

My boyfriend and I went thinking it would be fun to try different dishes. We were very disappointed. The dishes were small and overpriced as was the one glass of wine I had. Either the dishes should have been twice the size or half the price. We were shocked when we got the check. The staff were not particularly friendly either. I wouldn't recommend it or go back.

This place rocks. I walked in on Saturday night - there were no table avail till midnite. We went upstairs to the bar. The bartender was super attentive - and was more than happy to let us order food at the bar. After we ate - we were finally (an hour wait) seated in the lounge. The staff was very courteous and thanked us for waiting. The food never disappoints - and yes its a bit pricey - but we're in Manhattan - HEL-LO! My only complaint is that they dont keep some extra tables waiting for walk ins. I'm going back on Thurs with a ressie....

Unbelievable tapas. The portions are a bit small for the price, but seriously the food is that good. Everything on the menu is incredible and worth it. If you are looking for a nice date place this is perfect.

I have eaten at the SS several times. Food has always been excellent and wait staff more than courteous. I have trouble understanding the cranky reviews. I have gone with groups of four or six and everyone was always happy. The only improvement I could suggest is that they lower the music a little, but for those onion soup dumplings, crabcake corn dogs and crispy oysters Rockefeller, I can handle it.

I went with a big group last night and was not very impressed. Despite having a reservation, we were seated more than 30 minutes late after waiting in the crowded entrance without so much of an apology. The place was so loud that you could not hear the person next to you. The service was very slow and we could never find the waitress to order more drinks. While most of the food was actually pretty good and interesting, it was extremely overpriced for bite size portions. I definitely do not recommend the squid lettuce cups. Overall, I will not go back to Stanton Social and do not recommend it.
