    Awesome place!

The food at Penrose is what keeps me coming back, especially the burgers. The fried pickles are also quite tasty, and they make some good fries too. The crowd is typically young (20s/30s), and the place is getting more popular by the day. This place is just as much a bar as it is a restaurant, so don't go if you are looking for a quiet candle lit meal! I have personally never had an issue with the noise levels, so I guess to each their own. Do yourself a favor and go ASAP, you will not regret it.

    already a staple

As a young beer-enthusiast living on the UES, I'd been dreaming of a place like The Penrose forever. I went for the first time over the summer - three days after it opened - and have returned many times since (and brought friends!). Yes, it can get loud, and yes, the food options are somewhat limited, but that's part of what I love about the place. The idea, really, is that this is supposed to be a great bar that also happens to serve good food. I like the loud, convivial environment... the atmosphere falls somewhere between restaurant and bar. I've also always received great service, whether sitting at a table or at the bar. Servers and bartenders have always been warm and attentive - even in the midst of the happy hour rush! Probably not the place to go if you're looking for an intimate dinner, but I think it's a great place to start a night out (with classy bar food and an awesome beer list).

    newcomer

We tested the Penrose for the first time last time last night. As prior reviews stated, it was so loud that we found ourselves shouting to hear each other. Also during happy hour we were charged $5 for domestic beer and $10 for house wines, can't imagine what prices are after the happy hour is over. The menu has a handful of food items, very limited. The bartenders are too busy to give the appropriate attention to the customers, we had to wave down the bartender for another round of drinks. The Pinot Grigio was not fit for consumption and the bartender never acknowledged the untouched full glass of wine that remained on the bar. Not a place we would ever come back to with or with friends. Overpriced and poorly managed.

    Crazy loud

Decent place, but I wouldn't go there if you're looking for dinner on a Friday night. The place is unbelievably loud. Plus, chances are you're going to be sitting at a communal table and shouting to be heard over your neighbors. The bar was good, and had a decent selection of drinks and taps. Food was fine, but a bit expensive for what it was and nothing extraordinary.

    LOVE.

Went to the Penrose for the first time on a weeknight, for after work dinner and drinks. 1. The inside of the place/decor is amazing. And it's pretty large, with two bars and a plethora of seating, including a loooong table, booths to fit 6 and cozy corners everywhere (DATE SPOT!) 2. The service was great. Our waitress was nothing if not TOO attentive to our liking. But I always prefer that. 3. Food = good. Nothing too crazy, but good and decently priced. 4. Beer = above average for your local bar. Not as good as the Pony Bar selection, but still a decently impressive list of tasty beers from across the states. And from what I sampled from friends, yummy cocktails too. Disliked that the bathroom is downstairs. Disliked that the second bar in the back is small and kind of shoved in the corner behind the looong table. Makes it hard to get a drink. BUT, overall, I'll go back in a heartbeat. Place was packed with young 20ish people after work, not sure how the weekend scene is.

    Eh!

I had high expectations of this new spot. Love the gastropub vibe and food. The vibe was great for ues! I live here, so I'm always looking for something new and different. The food was basic at best. Iordered the shrimp, salad, mac n cheese, brisket sammies and they were just ok! I wouldn't go bavk for food, but the beer selection is good and unique.
