but what is with the bread they use for the heroes? it is so dry. to think they could use any of the multiple good bakeries in this city and the one they choose is so lackluster. such a shame.

The new outpost of the Meatball Shop is such a quick ride on the L to Williamsburg, it's a great alternative to the crowded Stanton St. location. I thought the food was wonderful. I had the naked balls (beef with spicy meat sauce) and a Market Salad--delicious! My friend had the hero with beef, felt it was too much bread but otherwise very good. He also tried the chicken with pesto (yum!) and the special, which was made with chorizo and manchego cheese and with crunchy almonds on top (also yum!). We noticed the Van Leeuwen truck parked across the street, but we felt the ice cream sandwiches were a terrific and cheaper alternative. Go for the macaroon cookie and brownie cookie, and the espresso ice cream was really good.

When my friends chose this spot for brunch, I was not happy. I'd heard the wait was long for mediocre food. At 3pm on a Saturday, our party of 7 was seated within 15 minutes. Our waitress was attentive and enthusiastic, explaining the menu in great detail. Our table was comfortable, despite sharing with 3 strangers. I got naked meatballs $7 - beef with spicy sauce and mozzarella with the $4 daily green (braised kale) on the side. The meatballs were AMAZING. The kale was unappetizing and bland (I didn't finish it) but the portion was very decent. My boyfriend got the beef meatball with mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes $11 - it was delicious! I ended up eating half his plate. On the side he got the daily salad $4, which sounded amazing and was supposed to be topped with walnuts, but it turned out to be a weird mix of greens and corn with some forgettable dressing, no walnuts. He had the Abita rootbeer on draft $3, which he said was very good. To finish we had the whiskey float $7 (vanilla and cream soda), which was very tasty. The service was great throughout the meal, and the rest of our party seemed to enjoy their food. I will definitely go back for the meatballs, but will stay away from the sides.

Oh my god, the meatballs are beyond delicious. Having been to the Manhattan location, the Williamsburg one is better: food and atmosphere. It's three times the size of the original so the wait isn't as unbearable. I highly recommend the chicken meatballs with mushroom gravy. The regular meatballs are okay, the pork is pretty good. The parmesan cream sauce is good, but really rich. The sandwich is the way to go: either three balls with cheese and choice of sauce on a tasty hero served with fresh salad of arugula and sliced apples, or two balls, cheese, sauce, on a sweet brioche roll with side salad. The only side I've had are the white beans which were bland. GO NOW.
