The best Service & Vegan Food

Due to current economic conditions i was searching for economic but good food to hold a b'day party. I was most happy with the curteous staff who not only played the birthday song but the service & the food was excellent. Guys use this place its value for money & excellent food. they also play some good indian music.

Excellent Service & good veg food

I am a Non Veg & my spouse is a Veg and to get good Vegfood in NYC is kind of difficult. This place came recommended for good veg food. Hence we tried it. The service was excellent & i for a change loved it The Spinach Masala Dosawas awesome. Also the Thali was a real good value for money. The ambience with Hindi music made me home sick.

One of the Worst South Indian food in NY

Ordered Idli, Vada, Onion Rava Masala Dosa, Uthappam and curd Rice (off-menu item) for delivery. Sad to say that none of the items were palatable. 50 bux wasted. the dosa was under cooked, the curry (potato) had no salt, the vada was under cooked and had no salt, the uthapam was also -- u guessed it, undercooked and without salt. and how can anyone mess up the simple plain idli? The icing on the cake was the curd rice though. the cook tried to fool us by mixing rice and Raitha !! needless to say, we were not happy and had to throw out more than half the food.

    Pretty good

I had the vegetable curry which I thought was pretty good! No one was in the place, so we had all the attention we needed. The Chai with soy milk was excellent. We also had the idlies, which were very good with the two dipping sauces you get. It's good to mix the two as well. I recommend it.

    Wonderful Dosas

Really delicious dosas. I love the spinach dosa and my husband can't get enough of the vegetable curry. Everything tastes really fresh. Super-friendly staff. Never had a bad experience. One of the best south Indian restaurants around.

Some of the Worst Indian Food I've Had In The City

I ordered the masala dosai - and in one word: disgusting. This was an insult to South Indian food... the food was overly greasy and salty. The potatoes in the dosai were freezing cold. It was evident that the potatoes had been in the fridge the entire time and my dosai was microwaved. I couldn't eat more than 4 bites, and it was doused in sambar. I DO NOT recommend this restaurant. It's some of the worst Indian food I've had in the city.

    cinnamon anyone?

Like a previous reviewer said, I too wish this were a great Indian restaurant. Unfortunately, it's not and as the only vegetarian Indian place in the East Village that's too bad. The idlis and dosas are OK, but I've had better. The appetizers are, in general, fried and extremely greasy. The other entree dishes, however, are horrible. These people don't know how to properly use spices and it seems like the only one they use is cinnamon, which overpowers everything. If you do decide to go here simply order the cheapest entree because they all taste exactly the same. If you're looking for Indian or Pakistani vegetarian fare you can find it in all of the Indian and Pakistani eateries in the East Village, and some of them are much cheaper than Madras Cafe (but none of them are very good either).
