The House

I dined at The House in February, and loved it. I was a bit concerned over the recent reviews, but decided to go back last night, for my daughter's birthday. What are all you people complaining about? The atmosphere (upstairs), is fabulous, as was the service. And everything we ordered was well prepared with interesting flavor combinations. Yes..the appetizer portions were small (3 cheese [select]ion and mushrooms with palentabut both dishes were very good), but the entree portions were fine. Not huge, but the quality of the food is more important. And most entrees are in the mid $20 range, which for an upscale place in NYC, is not that bad. Yes..the wines are pricy and the $61 bottle we ordered was a bit disappointing for the price. But overall, a special dining experience. The pasta with veggies and crab mac and cheese were standouts The tuna was one of the best preparations I've ever had (much better than at 24 Prince Street the other night). Total bill for 5 with tip was $360..and my fam can't wait to go back.

Very cozy spot and a great place to have a glass of wine but skip the food. We had a tuna dish that was ok and a mac and cheese w/crab which was really bad. All the touches are a bit off...bread is a cold and a little stale...entrees weren't that warm..nothing tastes that good. Go for a drink and maybe brave an appetizer but no more.

The setting and ambiance is great. The food is great too, but don't be too hungry - you will not get a lot of it. Several reviews have complained about the service and some of the staff - lets just say I understand what they refer too. I will be back, it is in my neighborhood and the place is too nice not to go back to overall. Decent wine selections too.

I went here on a date because I heard such great things about the ambience of this place. Well, I tell you, if this restaurant were in Skibo Castle, I wouldn't go back. Our waiter was a jerk and the food was the epitome of mediocrity, but what took the (over-priced) cake were some rejects from the subway station music circuit who the restaurant hired to "entertain" diners. If you value your hearing, don't enjoy a racket and want some good food, STEER CLEAR of The House.

I went last night for my birthday with my best friend. The atmosphere is fabulous, however I ordered the "mac & cheese" for $25 as a main course and it was extremely small, basically an appetizer size. It was delicious but certainly not worth the price. I ended up ordering another large plate which was the tuna. Not running back for a second meal anytime soon.

Had dinner here and the wine list was excellent. Enjoyed a wonderful Chardonnay and my friend had a Bloody Mary. The appetizers were the salad and the oysters and mussels and clams combo. They were all great except all the clams seemed to be empty. The entrees were the lobster roll and the monkfish and both were too salty to eat. Both entrees would have been good if they didn't use as much salt as they did which ruined the meals. Outside of that, the atmosphere is really nice.

The food is pretty solid here although the atmosphere is the draw. The menu and the wine list are pricey - not alot of value here. I want to like it more than I do since it is lovely and in my neighborhood. I have returned a few times to enjoy the atmosphere and would continue to do so if it were not for the lack of polish in the staff. Each time I have dined there been treated horribly by the hostess (same one each time) and with indifference by the waitstaff. It is a shame.
