    Poor experience

Miniscule portions...awful service...mediocre band with a disgusting $25/person cover charge...and if you're not a model they deny you entry downstairs no matter how much you've spent upstairs.

Truly dreadful, both for food and service.Overpriced for 14th st-a fairly downmarket street-and $25 cover charge per person for a mediocre band is a joke.

    Total hype and scam!

The food, sub-par. Nothing special. I ordered the octopus and it was covered in so much paprika. The dish should have been called paprika with octopus. If you look and see all the others who have said their food is great are young and new to dining experience. And are literally lumping their lounging/people watching fun and food experiences all together. The service, even poorer. I think the staff is miserable and the manager unapologetic. Maybe the manager and his wait staff are new to this job and doesn't realize that he is in the service industry. Everyone looked like they needed to be elsewhere. $25 extra for show on weekends. They never mentioned this when making our reservations. Their only saving grace is the fact that they run a lounge downstairs. And "hipsters" know that they also own 1Oak and Butter. Otherwise this place would've closed a long time ago.

    Yay!

Another places that lives up to the gravitas of having a name that starts with "The." Food was not great but it is a very cool and sexy atmosphere and if you can afford it you should go.

    Not worth the Hype

Overpriced for the quality of the food. Additionally they charge a 25 per person fee for "entertainment". The band played for a total of 30 minutes in the 2.5 hrs we were there. Not worth it. This place was empty for a saturday night - with multiple open tables.

$25 service fee per person on Friday and Saturday nights

This is the first review I have ever written but felt the need after my experience at The Darby the other night. I went with 4 friends. The atmosphere of the place is great and I was super impressed when I walked in - a little less impressed by the $16 cocktail but I have no problem paying for good food and drinks. Upon seating, my friend noticed small writting on the bottom of the menu saying that a $25 pp fee for entertainment would be charged on Friday and Saturday nights. My friend was not notified of this when she called to make the reservation. The entertainment was a very nice jazzish band that played about 5 songs during our 2 hour meal. The rest of the time, an ipod was playing. Our meal for the most part was very good. We enjoyed almost everything we ordered. My friends did ask to speak to the manager at the end of the meal regarding the entertainment fee. He was extremely rude and refused to waive the fee. So although the food was good, there are many other amazing restaurants to eat at in NYC for $100 pp that don't charge you $5 per song for entertainment. Go there instead

After hearing good things about Darby Downstairs we figured we'd make a reservations for dinner and then head downstairs for some post dinner cocktails. We were seated and upon reading the menu noticed on the menu in small print was a note that stated, " a $25 per person entertainment fee will be charged on Friday and Saturday nights.". Considering we were seated at 11:30 the band was almost done playing but never in my life have I paid for a bar-mitzvah/wedding band in addition to a meal! our dinner came out and everything was mediocre but the bill def was not. We ordered "glamour girls"...a vodka and mint drink with frozen watermelon cubes. The waiter offered us forks to chop up the cubes and when one of my friends spilled her drink we were quickly ignored and had to ask for someone to bring us a towel. Upon cleaning the table the rude waiter mentioned if I got a free drink every time I spilled one I'd be a rich man...mind you we did not ask for another drink in it's place. Our waiter did offer another as if it were on the house but in Darby fashion of charging for ice clearly they would charge for a spilled drink! We fought the entertainment fee and got that knocked off but after the waiter mentioned we should go downstairs to the lounge. After finishing up we walked outside to the other door and were told that it was guest list only..the crowd walking in there was def subpar.
