    disappionting

    I had good meals in the past, but this order was the second time of bad food. This time there was no flavor at all. I feel there is a new cook or a bus boy moved to top chef. We wound up throwing everything away.

    A Great Neighbor

    The Cottage continues to be popular with neighbors. It was one of the first Chinese restaurants to eliminate MSG. Before there was a NYC smoking ban they went smoke free. It has always looked more like a fine eatery then a Chinese restaurant. They have appealed to a wide variety of friends and family. Like all restaurants there are occassional misteps in a recipe (different night different chef). Also they have added some addtional Asian dishes (Thai) Stll a great place. The waiters can be a bit sour . But if they get to know you they sweeten if only a little. Stll a great value.

    OMG what has happened?

    As another reviewer pointed out, it is the end of an era. This used to be the best place...yes, we went for the free wine, but more than that, the food was really good. Not so anymore. Where we used to eat every morsel, today we only wanted a few forkfuls of each. We had it boxed up to go, but ended up throwing it away in the trash can down the block - even the smell was unpleasant. Anyway....a year ago my review would have been glowing, but after today's meal, I don't think I will ever go there again. PS....The ownerwas still there today, so it isn't under different management....so I'm not sure what the deal is - possibly change in chef.

    Best in the neighborhood

    I've been patronizing The Cottage for close to 20 years and as I've watched the neighborhood change from 'neighborhood' to 'tourist' and have seen a number of local restaurants disappear because of rising rents, The Cottage has maintained very good quality in both food and service. If you patronize the place more than a couple of times, your name is remembered, your requests for additional items, like chile oil, is remembered. Do I go on Saturday night to be surrounded by rude, demanding tourists from On The Ave Hotel? I'm smarter than that.

    Love the Food, Hate the Service

    Really good food for the money, but the service is not too good. They practically throw your food at you and run away for fear you might ask them for something...when you do ask for something they never deliver. However, the cheap food and free wine keep me coming back...

    Good Chinese Food, But Has Service Issues

    The food at the Cottage is very good and resonably priced. However, the service of the staff could use some improvement. The women at the front desk can be rude. When you ask how long the waiting time is, you receive a curt response of 45 minutes. After a 60 minute wait, and you enquire again, they stare at you blankly, and will not respond. it's actually quite infuriating. It generally takes an additional 20 minutes to get your check after you ask for it. Is the food worth the hassle? Not.

    gone downhill

    I and my family have been eating at or ordering from The Cottage an average of once or twice a week for more than 15 years. Recently the quality has gone severely downhill to the point where we will no longer patronize them. They deny any change in ownership or management, but it's obvious to me and many of my friends and neighbors that something has changed drastically. Sigh. All good things must pass.
