    poor service

I was excited to eat at Clerkenwell - I dated someone who lived next door to Summers and was pleased to be in the neighborhood again and see this place which looked charming and had a good menu. I still think it looks good, but the food was o.k., my fish and chips were served on a wooden board ? Not the best presentation or combination - crackers with the nice cheese plate (should have been fresh bread since they serve a chutney and paste with the cheese). The place was nearly empty on a Thursday night and still the waitress wasn't taking empty cocktail glasses or plates away or asking if we wanted coffee or dessert. Oh - and we split the bill with our credit cards, they charged my friend twice and me not at all. I'd go here for a drink and bar food, but not to sit down for dinner. And with cash.

    Fine

Fine, but nothing special. Were it a bar with food I'd say it's a decent one. As a resto with a bar, it's about average.

    Love it

I don't know what it is about this place but i just love it. Maybe it's because the place is cute, the staff is cool, the music is funky, the food is great and the drinks are dee-lish.

    Another substandard "theme" restaurant

There is nothing British about this place. I just came back from the UK and every greasy spoon in London can make a decent English fry-up. This place couldn't even get the eggs right (whites were raw), let alone serve some decent English bacon and properly cooked tomatoes and mushrooms. Where was the black pudding? Where were the beans? Where was the fried whole-meal bread (I was served dry white toast)? At $15 (!!!), you would be much better off going to your local diner for an American plate of eggs and bacon. The worst is when I ordered a cup of tea and was served a cup of lukewarm water with a wrapped tea bag on the side. If you're going to have a themed "British" style restaurant, at least get your tea right.

    Cool as....

This spot is one of the COOLest places. If you love hidden gems, you've got to check out this place! Once inside the decor makes it quite cozy and romantic. It's an experience you'll only find in NYC. The bartender is cute as and his drinks aint bad either. I agree with the 6/1/09 posting, the food is great for the price.

Not great, but I'll give it another chance

I went to The Clerkenwell with my girlfriend recently to try the sunday roast dinner (I'm English and homesick) and to sample the pub atmosphere. We were immediately told that as 'the weather had changed on them' they wouldnt be serving a sunday roast and wouldnt be for the rest of the summer which didnt make any sense to me, but thats their choice I suppose. To begin with, the guy allocating tables was very weird about it. He kept asking if we wanted to sit outside, but we declined and said we'd wait for a table at the bar. After about 10mins another couple walked in without reservations and were shown to a table immediately. We then asked again when our table would be ready, and he showed us to a table that had been empty all along! It felt to me like they wanted people sitting 'outside' (which was really just a couple of tables in the entrance way) and were punishing us for saying we didnt want to! It was odd, but we took our table and orderded. I had the full english breakfast which was very good, only complaints would be that the tomato was way undercooked and the bacon rather meagre. The sausage was amazing though. My girlfriend had a Chicken Waldorf salad which really missed the mark. The chicken was breaded which didnt really work, and they managed to forget both the apple and walnut! We were annoyed by this, but had other things to do so ended up just paying and leaving...not that anyone enquired whether everything was ok anyway! The service definitely needs to step up a notch, and the attention to detail needs to improve, but I would definitely give it another shot. Some of the other diners food looked very good and the menu was quite varied. One other point I would make....they need pint glasses! They serve draft beer, including Guinness, but they dont serve it in a pint glass!! That is totally unthinkable to me, especially since they market themselves as a English gastropub.
