overrated and overpriced
This is one of our most disappointing choices in NYC! The prices are not posted anywhere and you get sticker shock at the register! We ordered 2 small bowls of mac and cheese and a chocolate chip cookie, the total was $18 for bland, lukewarm mac and cheese and a greasy cookie. The decor is unremarkable and we would not be returning to this place, nor recommend it to anyone.

Worlds best macarroni and cheese!
This wonderful nyc sceney place has hands down the most unbelievable macorrni and cheese. Wish I could get the receipe. It is incredibly expensive and incredibly worth it! It is my monthly indulgence (at these prices has to be). The hot chocolate is also best in city. Hint - get the smaller size, much less expensive and you get the same taste experience. Atmosphere is wonderful with lots of interesting people watching. The owner is there a lot as well and keeps the quality of food very high.

Chocolate chip cookies are not good
Went in for a chocolate chip cookie craving and left utterly disappointed. Greasy, too chewy, salty, and had a certain taste of fried food. Not sure where they keep the cookies before putting them on the counter, but surely close to the kitchen food prep area. Not recommended.

Only rating the pretzel croissant
This review only goes for the pretzel croissant, because that is all I grabbed to go. I actually went there to get a blueberry muffin, because I had heard they make one of the best in the city. They were out so I decided to go for the pretzel croissant because I had heard it was good. I am not a croissant person and wasn't expecting much but oh my god, it is so delicious!Get it. Now.

Love/hate
I've been frequenting City Bakery for years now. I agree with other reviewers that their food is WAY overpriced. It is good, but come on. I go there, as it's a place to relax, chat with friends, flip through a magazine, and not be rushed out of your seat. There are few things they could do to make me happier. One being, get some servers without the attitude...so unappealing! You're still just a server, people! Also, please, please, please, bring back the melted chocolate cookie. I can't for the life of me understand why it went away, and why it hasn't come back. It's literally been years now, so saying it was 'seasonal' which I was once told, does not ring true. I guess they get enough people in there, that they don't really care.

what's up w the forks?
this place rocks. is it expensive? yes. does it taste really good? yes. it is a pleasure to eat there. my only complaint is the quality of their plastic forks. i'm paying $23 for a plate of food, i'd like a decent fork. really. pax has better forks. work it out, city bakery. it's in poor taste...and that's just not like you.

Good, but overpriced
$9.00 for a muffin and a hot chocolate (the size of a small coffee) is a little too much for me. The muffin was very good, but it wasn't ground breaking. And the hot chocolate - I can see why some people would LOVE this hot choc, but it wasn't for me. It's just SOOOO chocolate-y! And very thick. It was too bitter for me. So I was a little disappointed. But, it's a really cool place to sit and have a snack and all the food looked delicious. And the people are very nice.
