    Not great

Really mushy - oozing out of the side mushy - sushi, especially the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. I had to call it quits a few bites in. The nabeyaki udon was better, but not great.

The most unappetizing spicy tuna roll of all time

The rolls here are just not good, plain and simple. I went with two other people and none of us were impressed. I got a spicy tuna and a spicy salmon roll and they were inedible- I had to send them back. They were over-filled with a pile of mush that I am not even sure was fish; and they barely had any rice. I would not recommend this place at all; there are way better sushi options on the UWS.

    Sub-par sushi

Why is this place popular? We tried 3 kinds of sushi and all 3 lacked any contrast in texture or flavor. Instead, each piece -- even those described as "crunchy" -- was mushy and muddle flavored. It couldn't compare favorably even to takeout sushi. I'll never go back.

    All around great sushi

I’ve been a loyal Tenzan fan since it opened its doors on the UWS 5 years ago. When I moved to the UES, I was relieved to know they opened an East side location. Now that I’ve moved downtown, I would still rather take the train here than eat locally in FiDi. While I don’t think it’s the ultimate BEST sushi I’ve ever eaten (I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Mickey’s in Forest Hills), it is definitely consistently great, reasonably priced, great portion size and terrific service. The UWS location recently underwent renovations and it’s really become a lovely restaurant for all occasions – date night or family dinner. (The upstairs, remnants of the original restaurant layout, is more intimate.) Their regular sushi rolls are excellent; their specialty rolls are all terrific; the maki combinations are a great value. The house salad, the seaweed salad and the pan-fried gyoza (veggie) are excellent. Their shrimp tempura roll is huge and fresh and comes with the delicious eel sauce. (Get the Special Dragon roll for an exaggerated version … shrimp tempura wrapped in eel.) Rainbow rolls are so fresh and you can actually taste a differentiation in the fish. Highly recommend Tenzan!

    Love Tenzan!

I ordered delivery one night and randomly picked Tenzan based on other reviewers comments. I ended up ordering a few items off of their sushi menu - the Spicy Tuna Roll, Kani Naruto, and the Peanut Avocado Roll. I was pleasantly surprised it came with a soup or salad. The delivery service was fast and the food was delicious and extremely fresh!! This is my new favorite sushi spot on the UWS and am glad I have found this place.

    Best Spicy Tuna

I don't know how, but they always have the freshest tasting spicy tuna.

    Definitely not the same quality

Either the ownership, management, chef, food purveyor or all have changed. As another review stated, something has gone seriously wrong recently. I have eaten here conservatively over 200 times (I ate here about 2-3x time a week for the last few years.... ) between take out and dine in and I noticed a gradual, then sudden, decline in fish quality, service, presntation, etc. Love the new layout but they better do something about the food and service!
