    LOVE Tenzan!

The best sushi on the UWS (although I haven't tried Gari yet)! Amazing food. Excellent service. Good prices. We love Tenzan and their staff!

    Consistently Excellent

I've dined here many times and every experience has been excellent. Tasty, high quality food and fast, friendly service. When I dine here, I am guaranteed a great, hassle-free dinner.

    The perfect sushi place!

Tenzan has quickly become our favorite casual dining place. The sushi is always fresh and delicious, with creative twists on ordinary rolls. The service is extremely fast for both dining in and delivery. I would highly recommend the calamari appetizer.. . it is just divine.

    Excellent Sushi for the UWS

Tenzan is clearly a "classic" quality sushi place. Ambiance is basic, and they have wisely chosen to focus their effort and money on food quality and prep. Fish quality is consistant, and is very good, even on a Sunday night. While I have heard issues with the service, I have never experienced any problems. They even have nice touches like providing frosted beer mugs, which makes the Ichiban taste even better. Clearly worth the trip to the UWS for fish, and definitely worth a taste if you live in the UWS and are looking for a slightly more classic and superior food-quality sushi experience than Haru.

    Unexpected surprise

A few months ago I gave up on my search for an affordable sushi restaurant on the UWS. I came upon Tenzan by accident and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the chirashi. Hands down it was the best quality of fish that I have had in this part of town, and the portions were great. Price was reasonable and service prompt and not overbearing (as some Japanese places are.) I can't wait to go back and I have been recommending this place to all my friends. UWS is no longer hopeless for decent sushi which won't make you bankrupt.

    2nd best UWS

If Gari is #1 in the uws, this is probably #2...unless you like Neo (and are half bent)...sushi ranges from average to exceptional...tenzan is near the high end of above average (considering the location,) if you compare it to haru, roppongi, etc. whatever, i'm picky...so someone hip me...where is THE sushi spot in the uws. I've been to Masa, excellent.

    Well worth it

Thought the food was excellent, very good to see a wide array of choices as well as some non-standard sushi options (some roll combinations work very well). The fish and rice are both excellent, and all of the food was top quality. The service is a bit of another story: there was a lot of confusion in seating us, and even though we had a reservation it took a solid 20 minutes to get a table (which would have been better with a "we can sit you at the bar for 10 minutes while we get a table" rather than the limbo of "just two more minutes". Seinfeld anyone?) Add to this the irony of suggesting we get a reservation next time and some order miscues, and the service was less than stellar. However, from an overall dining standpoint, the place was busy, and this is new york, so these things are bound to happen from time to time. If you are looking for a good sushi place to try, our miscue in service should not dissuade you from trying this place. The food is excellent and well worth the trip. While it is true that it isn't cheap, it certainly isn't extortionate as far as sushi is concerned. Bottom line: the food is great, and this place is worth a try.
