Ok, so after going to a Broadway diner in the area which refused to seat us away from the door, my sister and I ventured over to Columbus Ave. We spotted Tenzan and decided to give it a try. We had the lunch specials, I had tempura, and she had teriyaki. The food was sooooo good! The staff is soooooo pleasant, and the atmosphere is just right. The tempura is so light, the veggies and shrimp were fresh and tasty. The miso soup was very nice, not too salty. We also had a few shumai, and they even rolled the sushi with brown rice! (not many places will acomodate that request, and the waitress suggested it!) My sister and I have plans to go back this weekend! Maybe we'll see you there. :-)

What I liked about Tenzan is that its not expensive, I enjoyed our seats by the windows, it made the experience better and for a reasonable price you can get average sashimi. What I loved about Tenzan is the spicy tuna crunch rolls and I loved the sweet potato rolls. I also recommend the Chilean sea bass roll. What I did not like about Tenzan. . . . The Green River Roll at Tenzan really leaves a lot to the imagination. It is boring and has no flavor to speak of. I think it should be a crime to charge 13.50 for a bunch of rice wrapped with lettuce. Its not that everything has to be spicy or tricked out with flavor, I can appreciate mild flavors, but rice with sashimi scraps tucked in it, wrapped sloppily into a thin chord of lettuce for almost 14 dollars, no thanks. Our two appetizers, theTuna Tiradito & the Yellow tail vinaigrette were nice attempts but when the fish itself tastes better without the sauce, then maybe Tenzan should make another attempt at making a sauce that complements the food. I mean its Raw fish, its already wet, and when you add this watery sauce to wet fish, it just becomes more wet. I can keep going but Its not like I own the place and I'm sure some people like it lamely executed, so whatever. The staff at Tenzan were very nice and attentive, and I know they want to go home, but I think its rude to collect soy sauce bottles, while your customers are still eating, luckily our waiter noticed that the other knuckleheads had taken our soy sauce away and brought it back. I could understand this if we were the only ones left but there were 4 other couples still eating in this tiny place. It costs nothing to be nice. So would I go back to Tenzan? Yes, but with lower expectations than what I expected from the reviews posted.

ever since my friends introduced me to Tenzan, i've been going very frequently even though i lived at upper east side. The foods are awesome and fresh. and great to know that they even have new location at East 89 2nd ave.and close to my residential and working place. I tried it out with my family and thank God, this restaurant never disappoint us. The sushi and sashimi pieces are so fresh and tasty. we really enjoy the atmosphere by the comfortable booth seats and friendly sushi chef and wait staff. Excellent and worth trying.

This is the best sushi joint I've had on the UWS. Expecially good service, excellent food, modern decor.

I have no idea why their sushi is so much better than everyone else's, but on the UWS this place can't be beat. I cannot get enough of it. I swear they must have an addictive additive in it.

Fresh fish, wonderful rolls - plump, tasty, best ratio of fish to rice - one roll can fill you up, though you're going to want more! Spicy crunch tuna roll is my favourite, white tuna & scallion is delicious as well. Good non-sushi choices (beyond teriyaki!) for groups that have non-raw-fish eaters. By far my #1 pick for sushi.
