    Great Bar

I love this place. The service is wonderful the food is excellent. I love going and getting whatever they have on the specials menu. There is always something new but then they have the weekly special staples. Wednesday meatloaf is one of my favorite dishes. Sometimes on Sundays all I can think about is the fried chicken. Go, get a special, enjoy a pint. You won't be disappointed

    Disappointing experience

Went to this restaurant with a friend who's been there before and raved about it. On the night we went there, the smell in the restaurant when we entered was horrendous. It was a mix of a generic pub stench, mixed in with the smell of fried sea-food and stinky, rancid cheese! The place was very dark and the overall service was horrendously poor and slow. After getting a cramped two-top, the wait to get serviced and be attended to, was super long. After finally taking the order, the waitress never came to check on the table, the bus boy only brought water, and we had to ask for bread since they never brought any and we were still waiting for food after 30 mins of just sitting there. It took 30 minutes just for one main course and one salad! Totally unacceptable. And, again, the staff was completely inattentive to us. When the food finally came, my friend's dish was basically a highly marked up chicken dish with mashed potatoes and a piece of floppy, steamed broccoli, that you could get in any diner for much less. Nothing special at all. My salad (Spinach and Watercress), however, had a nice surprise in it- onion skins from a peeled onion! And the salad didn't even have onions as an ingredient. Also, although the ingredients listed roasted fennel- the fennel was nowhere to be found. But, the salad was loaded with radicchio, although it wasn't listed as an ingredient. I had to return this abomination. I asked, instead, for a beet and goat cheese salad on a bed of arugula. Of course, after a lengthy wait, the salad finally came, and the arugula was drenched in water and not dried at all. The beets were completely overcooked, bland and unappetizing, and the salad was very poorly arranged. Huge chunks of cut, but not separated beets were just dropped in a couple of corners of the plate. Very dull. The best part was that while I was still eating, the food for the table next to us arrived. I was asked by the bus boy to get up (!?!) while I was still chewing, so he could deliver the food to the table. Because of a cramped set-up, there was no space between the adjacent tables. I have NEVER experienced this before anywhere. Given the inattentive service and unappetizing food, I will never return again.

    Tavern On Jane = quaint...

Ate here Friday September 30, 2011. We went here because we got a deal for a discount 50%off /up to $25.00 off check. We are glad we did! It is a relatively small, well kept good looking place. There is a fireplace in a back alcove dinning area (seems great for a group/party/gathering). There are 2 waitstaff and a busboy - due to the size and flow design of the room, but all help out. Our waiter was a nice person. The discount says "18% gratuity may be added to check" - it was, we gave him 20%! The food selection and quality for what is described as a "tavern" is excellent. Our waiter recommended a wine better than the selection we were thinking of at the same price when asked to help with our possibly choice. He actually had us sample the choices before agreeing to buy. I had a half a roasted chicken and switched white rice for potatoes and broccoli. It was very moist and flavorful chicken. My wife had a great fish and chips dinner with excellent tartar sauce. A real taste of England!! The vibe is a mix of Cheers and a New England type eatery. The exposed brick walls and the butcher paper on the tables with a glass of crayons to doodle with are a nice touch. If we lived in the neighborhood this would definitely be "our neighborhood go to place". We told our waiter who works Wednesday - Friday that we will see us again.

Best fish & chips in the village

Tavern on Jane makes the best Beer Battered Fish & Chips we've ever had, and we've tried them from every restaurant that serves them. The fish is light and fresh , the batter puffy and crisp and it's not greasy. The fries are excellent. as is the cole slaw. Also deserving of an award is Lillian's Cobb Salad. No one makes it better. Ample, creative and delicious. After having this Cobb Salad, eating it elsewhere will make you feel cheated. The delivery is swift. The food arrives hot and the delivery men are cheerful. They only deliver lunch, Monday through Friday, and we wish they'd increase their hours. Excellent restaurant who clearly cares very much about serving beautifully prepared fresh food.

    The Best French Fries!

Had dinner there for the first time last night and was pleasantly surprised. Service was outstanding; if our server was busy, another offered to help without us even asking -- the way it should be! It was a very busy Thursday night but we always got ample attention from the staff. The prime rib was surprisingly good and not too fatty. The best part was the fries, though -- they were incredibly delicious! I would go back again in a heartbeat!
