    Indifferent Service, Dry Fish

Had brunch here the other day and was very impressed by the potatoes, but not much else. We had to order coffee three times before I finally walked over to the wait stand and asked for it again. We asked for ketchup twice. The fish on my "Tavern Eggs" was dry but was ok when covered in the sauce. Perhaps our waitress sensed we were disappointed at the lack of coffee and service because she added a 17 percent gratuity to our check. Ah well, the search for a regular brunch spot continues.

    Neighborhood Place

I've lived around the corner from Tavern on Dean for years. I love the service and the charm of the place. The food is fine, so I end up going from time to time. It's an institution and it seems like everyone there is having a good time.

    Meh

Don't mind tipping, if I had something something worthwhile to tip on. Food and service still mediocre; even the burger 'lacks.'

    Great neighborhood place

A favorite neighborhood place. Superb brunch in particular. Love everything about the place- and you have to be particularly blind not to notice the large print telling you that a gratuity is added.

Wow, I fell for that too!

Reading these reviews, I just realized I fell for the gratuity thing, too. I'm usually pretty careful to check, but there were only 2 of us and it was election night, so I must have been distracted. We had a great meal and, since we live in the neighborhood, I'd been planning on making it a regular spot. Sorry, won't be back. That's not fair. If you've noticed a customer has accidentally double tipped, you should say something. The policy should be stated clearly, not just in the fine print.

watch out for the gratuity scheme

Just had dinner, got home and was thinking about the bill and it seemed too high. Then it dawned on me . . . they added gratuity without mentioning that they had done so. I was so annoyed that I called and asked about the gratuity. Turns out they add 20% tip to ALL parties (no matter how small). Supposedly they tell you this on the menu and check, but not one person in my party saw any indication of this so they need to do a better job stating the tip policy clearly. I feel totally duped by the place since my mediocre waitress ended up with a 40% tip! I will never go back and will never recommend the place. It is too bad, the food is pretty good.

    awful service, ok food

the mandatory 17% tip is ridiculous, and maybe that's why the service isn't good. on an empty night, it was impossible to get a glass of water, and took 25 minutes to get the waitress to take our order. burger was OK, but a little on the expensive side for what it was. it's too bad, because it's a nice place, but one i would avoid avoid avoid.
