poor food, poorer service
I stumbled upon the other reviews of this restaurant and am shocked that people had positive things to say. My food took 45 minutes to make, my thali was missing components. That would have been tolerable, but when my yogurt was spoiled and I asked to speak with a manager it took 10 minutes, yes 10 minutes to come to my table (only after I asked for the manager two more times). I am not in the habit of writing poor reviews, but tamilnadu bhavan deserves it.

Best on Curry Hill, hands down!
Tamil Nadu Bhavan is hands down the best restaurant in the neighborhood and, arguably, in Manhattan. I've been there three times now and each meal has been even better than the last. Tonight I had the Chenai Thali and my friend had the Bombay Thali. Both were extraordinary in so many ways. The Dosa in my thali was light and crispy with two different kinds of potato mixtures for wrapping. The Iddly was terrific too. The Pori included in the Bombay Thali was simultaneously crunchy on one side and soft on the other making for a great combination. The Chana Saag was very different than any I've had before and incredibly tasty. There was also this vegetable patty included with the Bombay Thali that I found very nutty and fulfilling. So much so that I bought 4 more to take home with me for lunch tomorrow!. Even the dessert, something I usually avoid at Indian restaurants, was terrific! On past visits I've had the Mysore Masala Dosa and the Sambar Vada both of which were exceptional. Overall, I can't say enough about this place and I plan to go back very often. My office is nearby too so I'll probably try some of their lunch specials next.

Authentic...
This is probably some of the best South Indian food in the area. The smell as you enter is as though you are actually set foot in Tamil Nadu (only the good smells of course). Their Dosas are excellent and the chutneys and sambar are some of the best in the city.

Rare south indian resturant
This place serves one of the best dosas in NY I have ever seen, and believe me i have been on the hunt for delicious south indian food forever. The price is definetly normal for manahattan standards. The ambience is not that great but the food makes up for it. So if you have cravings for lil pricey tasty south indian food, this is the place.

Typical Indian Hill restaurant
Just another Indian restaurant in Indian Hill. Maybe I'm spoiled by the great quality Indian foods near there, but I didn't find anything special about this place. Everything was the way it should be, but wasn't dazzling either. Though the service was a little stoic, perhaps because that particular waiter didn't speak good English or maybe he just wasn't in the mood to explain to me the difference between masala in a dosa and masala in a chicken. This info I got from somewhere else.
