    Israeli Service Standards

We were 3 for Thanksgiving dinner. Our group couldn't decide if what the waitstaff (and the owner), lacked in professionalism, which cannot be overstated, was compensated for by the Israeli-style charm, which in my personal opinion was also considerable, but maybe I was being generous due to the holiday. Here's the play-by-play: Multiple phone calls from the restaurant days before dinner to get out credit card information (this was the first sign of serious communication issues within the restaurant). Seated next to the drafty front door (and lied to: "Nobody ever uses that door". Not true). Out of the wine we wanted, our second choice arrived too warm (We were asked at the time we ordered it if we wanted it at room temperature. Does anyone drink Pinot Grigio at room temperature?). No bread plates, no water until we asked for it. A few times. Were forced to move to a different table mid-dinner because the one we were occupying was needed by another party (20% discount was offered and accepted. Another diner who observed this told us we should have held out for 30%). Entrees didn't come with spinach as advertised -- we had to ask for it. Cleanliness issues in the kitchen observed during a trip to the restroom. Bill came with a charge for a side of spinach and no 20% discount -- again, we had to ask. As all of these screw-ups were going on, the owner shared with us his service philosophy: improvise as you go. OK -- thanks for sharing. Anyhow, some people be charmed by all of this because the waitstaff can be sweet in their Israeliness, but others will feel like this is basically unresponsive, incompetent service, period., which at these prices should not be the case.

    Not Good

Went on a weeknight with my wife. Ordered sushi, took 45 minutes to get sushi, was told by the waiter that they had to go buy the ingredients since they had run out. the sushi was not very good, dry dry dry. ordered a drink, i think it was a long island ice tea, poorly prepared and completely overpriced. will not return.

I had an 80th birthday party for my mother and was pleasantly surprised by the great food, service, and atmosphere!

    Recommended!

We had a Shabbat dinner at Talia's. The hospitality was outstanding; the owner really cared about our guests having fun. There was a prix-fix menu which included salad with sliced salmon, brisket or curry chicken for entree and tiramisu or chocolade dome for dessert. All the portions were big and delicious (even the desserts, given they were parve, were not bad). We got excellent value for our money and will definitely be back again.

    downer

tried this place a few times and hoped for the best, but was disappointed each time. the food was okay, not great- the service was horrendous! we ordered a few bottles of wine and they had no wine glasses (though the restaurant was not full). they had run out of bread. we ordered sushi and they left the avacado out of each roll. when we complained, they told us they ran out of avacado and forgot to tell us, but did not want to take it off our bill (they eventually agreed). the steaks were overdone, despite asking for blood rare... thank goodness for good laughs and good company. but, sorry to say, cannot recommend this place.

    great food, great service!

yesterday, my friend and i enjoyed a great dinner at my favorite upper west side location - Talia's Steakhouse. i had the tastiest filet mignon prepared medium rare, while my friend, who is a fish lover, ordered a st. peter's tilapia, and was particularly satisfied with the quality of the food. service was prompt, and even though i'm kind of picky, my waiter was always smiling and ready to assist us. i highly recommend Talia's Steakhouse! if you haven't been there, you should definitely give it a try!

    What happened?

My 5/16/07 visit to Talia's was a major disappointment and an embarressment in front of my guests. My last visit was about two years ago and the experience was great: food, service, wine all excellent. Has there been a change in ownership or management? After ordering a bottle of wine, the waiter brought glasses to the table that were wet inside and out. The inside of the glass had water collected on the bottom and large droplets of water around the bowl. When I asked for a dry glass, the waiter said that he had washed them because they did not look clean but could not dry them without leaving towel residue on the glass! The steaks and chops were alright, but I have certainly had better. The mashed potatos were more like pureed potatos. They were so loose that a spoon was a better implement than a fork. A desert order for apple tart was taken and then rejected because "the kitchen did not prepare any crust". Finally, my alleged decaffinated espresso tasted suspiciously like Sanka with a head of foam. It was undrinkable. I do not think I will be going for a third try.
