Never try to order online in advance!
now that H&H is gone, Tal is our choice for bagels. but the staff is rude, and when I tried to pre-order bagels using their online service, they came that day instead of 2 days later as ordered. and when I called to complain I got attitude from an employee who kept saying "but you got the bagels, right?" lousy service.

the best place to go out to
i just think its just a place to go out to, because the atmosphere is great and you can see them MAKING the bagels in the back (watching the process is great). The bagels are great, but a bit different than any other in the neighborhood. tip: the guys there give you so much cream cheese, just ask for a second bagel to use up whatever you dont eat on the first one

Not worth the 'tude
Good bagels, poor attitudes. I should have listened to the many other reviews here and elsewhere that indicated the staff is rude - though that is an understatement; they are offensive.

Rudest counter help
I will say that the food is quality, however the outragous pricing, even for NYC, along with the rude servers make what should be the best bagel place in the neighborhood not worth going back to. One after another, they are as rude and as obnoxious as one can get. I blame this on store management because they not only witness it, they ignore the complaints from their customers who raise it as an issue. That said, their tuna salad is fantastic...

Best Bagels
I don't know how you can't like Tal Bagel! They have a few and the bagels are yummy and they give a good amount of what you want on it. The food is fresh and the staff is great!

Go elsewhere
My fiancé and I used to come here regularly as it's pratically across the street from our apartment. The service was never great but after they were outright rude a few times we refused to come back. The bagels are small and overpriced as well. There are other bagel places a few blocks away (Bob's and H&H) that have better bagels and solid service.

Poorly run store
What a shame. I've lived in different places on the UES since '86, and there was a time this was an excellent place. Since then, it has declined to the point where it is so poorly run that I will not patronize the tore anymore. They have an unfriendly way of dealing with customers, there is no way to know where you are supposed to go when you walk in to place your order. Don't worry, they'll selectively bark at you to "go to the other side" when the mood strikes them. You see, you are supposed to know that when you enter you are supposed to walk past a long glass encased counter to the other side - no sign, no indication, no design to tll you this, just rude braked orders. To make things worse, during about a half dozen recent visits this seems to only be "the system" when they are feeling lazy (4 customers, 4 counter workers?) or when they are busy, which is also when they do not follow their own system and allow anyone who heads to the register to jump ahead of those on line. The last three times I was there they pissed customers off with this nonsense and actually had the nerve to act as if EVERYONE should know their magic system and be rude to any one who commented on how poorly run the store is. There are too many other places to spend money in NYC, and it is most definitely their loss, as I live only a few stores down and would have been likely to spend hundreds there over the months. If a business does no value their customers and treats them like inconvenient intrusions or children, they will not ever get another dime from me.
