Grew up in Harlem and customer of Sylvia's for years. This Sylvia is banking on & taking advantage of the Representation built by the "Original". The Tourists are bused in and have no clue what's wrong & missing. Issues: 1. Server stood at one end of the table to take the orders from a table of 9. 2. The Server stood at the end of the table as asked the person at the end to please pass the waters down. 3. The Server asked us to pass the empty plates to him. 4. No Bus person to clean tables. 5. Worst, they vacuum with an electric vacuum (noisy) kicking up dust while we are eating. This happened 4 times while I was there - carpet on the floor. Get a small broom or a push broom without noise. 6. Food came out warm Not Hot. Food was okay not great. I'm sad that this place is crowded but I'm sure not repeat customer unless through tour company but I'm sure that will slow soon with all the other restaurants coming up in the area. At the moment no other "Southern Soul Food" place giving competition. Then again, they are coming due to the name and History. Sad that they are more concern about the money and not training staff and food and decor needs help too.

Ordered here for first time and was very excited. Called about delivery, which they do not do. Ordered for pick up and they forgot my sides. Called and they would not credit us or bring us sides. Had to go all the way back and pick them up or would have lost out on money. Hope the food is worth it.

I was there in 2011 & I said it would be the last time going there. No wait to get a table, but it took about 20 minutes to get our breakfast which was cold when it hit the table. Grits were already hard & eggs was sitting on the plate a while before we got them. It took mgmt about 15 minutes to come to our table to resolve the matter. We ended up not paying and not eating either. The mgr was very pleasant & offered his apologies. The restaurant was not crowed either so what was the problem.. In fairness, I must say that quite a few years ago when Sylvia was still there it was a hell of a lot better. People were lined up outside to get in, food was good & hot, service was on point. I guess the family need to reasses their business and service and come up with a better plan. I really enjoyed the restaurant back in the day but can't afford to travel there & get disappointed again. I do wish them well and much success. I dont discourage anyone from going because maybe it has changed. If so, please post your experience.

I don't like giving bad reviews but I feel that if I say Sylvia's is a great place, I would be lying. I heard so much about Sylvia's that I figured since we were going to be up in Harlem for my son's graduation, we should try out her restaurant. The one good thing is that we didn't have to wait long. About 10 mins at the most. The food was average at best, nothing special. The portions were also average as I heard they give huge portions with enough to take half of it home to have for a full meal the next day. I really don't think so. Now the really bad part....the service. Not only was it very slow, it was bad. I don't know if it was the waitress that we had, or if that is how all the wait staff are. We went there with my son, my husband, myself, my mom and a friend. My friend ordered the hamburger and since she is allergic to sesame seeds, she asked if the bun had seeds on it. The waitress told her no it was plain. Ok great! After waiting about 20 mins for the food, they brought out our order and her hamburger with a bun that had seeds on it. Our waitress said that she would go and get her a new bun. Well we waited and waited and nobody came and brought it out. So my friend asked 2 busboys....still nothing. Finally the waitress came back and at this point her food was cold and she wanted new food. The waitress seemed a bit annoyed but agreed to bring her a new plate of food. That took another 10 minutes. So all in all, it was not a great experience. All she had to do was run back into the kitchen to get a new bun which would have taken all of a couple mins at the most. Another complaint that I have is with their iced tea. The iced tea on their menu is sweetened. I love iced tea but don't like it with sugar as I add 1 pkg of Equal. Now I know southern food is big with that "Sweet Tea", which is fine, but there really should be an unsweetened option. It was also very warm in there as I don't think they had the air conditioning on high enough. I really don't know what all the hype is, so I'm going to say that I probably won't go back.

Great place! I rarely go to restaurants and eat food and say their food was delish! I had smothered chicken white meat and it came with two sides I choose collard green and candied yams. And it also came with a free huge piece of corn bread . Their portions was huge and they marinate their chicken a day before so it is very fresh and tasty. They are the best soul food restaurant in new York city. I did to-go, paid 16.23 for my meal and it lasted me two days dinner and lunch and I ate a lot so you know that meal was big. Very satisfied! I can't wait to go back. I even got a friendly greeting when entering and leaving . They are just great, honest.

I ordered chicken & dumpling, and when I got home I noticed, I received a piece of chicken for $13.95. I know our country is going thru a financial crisis, but damn. How can you charge someone $13.95 for a piece of chicken w/2 sides. The mac & cheese and greens were tasty. The chicken & dumplings was ok. My friend's mother c & d taste better.

My wife and I (from Dublin, Ireland) visited NYC in March for the first time. Had heard about Sylvias, and we were not disappointed! Although foreigners we felt at home instantly - in no small part to our server. The fried chicken was like nothing I had ever tasted so crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside, the garlic mash, the ribs, I could go on! Very warmhearted, friendly and great home style Southern food.
