    2009 May Review- Sushiya

I went yesterday for the first time because of rave reviews. I've been to lots of Japanese restaurants because I've been working for a Japanese company for five years. The place is not highly commendable, but rather mediocre. There is an Asian phrase that goes-- if native Chinese dont eat at that Chinese restaurant, Dont bother youself. Same goes for Japanese. The place is highly praised by gaijins because its really affordable and the sushi is not bad. I said the quality of raw fish is not bad. Rice is extremely important to me. If the quality doesn't meet up with my expectations, it goes down my list. Sushiya's rice quality is so uninspiring. Definitely not high-quality and the combination of raw fish and average rice feels/taste different to me. Because the best rice emits a certain smell and looks perfect. I wont tell you what makes the best rice. You'd have to get that info from eating high-quality rice. There are many Japanese restaurants using mediocre rice. I'm frankly saddened by this because it deteriorates the quality of the whole meal. Lunch time at Sushiya, I paid like 25 dollars including tip for sahimi ikura, uni, spicy salmon roll and one bowl of rice. if you love sashimi, this place is not a bad choice. The food is presented at the right temperature so that's an extra point for them, plus its reasonable.

    Sub-par lunch

Although the rice to fish ratio is fine, the rolls themselves are nothing to write home about. Very sub-par sushi, at least as far as lunch goes. Spicy tuna is super saucy there's actually more sauce than fish. Yellowtail and tuna rolls are made of already mushed up pieces of fish, with a nice blend of fish ligament. The service does come with a smile, though.

    Tasti Sushy

Very tasty, good value. Went here with two couples, we both had the sushi for two. Enjoyed it very much. Going back again.

    Quick, tasteful and cheap

It is located in the midtown, close to businesses and the shopping on the 5th Av. It is a decent size restaurant that accepts reservations but normally has space for the walk ins. The service is polite. They are precise and always on time. The only problem is that sometimes is hard to get an explanation. The food comes out in matter of minutes and it is always fresh and properly prepared. The check is always a pleasant surprise, as you food expect to pay much more for a full belly.

    GREAT value for decent food

After reading all the reviews, I decided to try this place out. Now I've had a ton of sushi in my day, including some of the best places throughout Japan, so my standard may be much higher than most. Food - all in all not bad. I only had sushi so I can't comment on any of the cooked stuff, but the fish is fairly fresh but is it world-class? No. The [select]ion is very average. That said, I'd eat there again (for delivery, perhaps) and the food is acceptable. The value in my opinion is excellent, however. I had a TON of sushi (I eat a lot) for less than 40 bucks, and as I said before, the food is not bad. So it's a great value and I might do it as a local place for delivery, though I don't think all the previous accolades in other reviews are warranted.

    Great Find!

I went here based on the reviews I read. I was not disappointed. The sushi is great - the best Philly rolls I've ever had. The service is good too. It's usually not too crowded and the food comes quickly. I highly recommend Sushiya!

    Super Duper Fresh Fish

I went here after research on menupages. Man, all the previous reviewers were right. This place has incredibly high-quality fish/sushi. I got plain sushi, nothing fancy and started with my least favorite -- what a surprise! Buttery, tender, melt-in-your mouth fish. I'm not quite sure how they do it because they must get their fish from the same places that every other sushi bar in the city gets them. I went alone, with a book. It got a bit loud, but I'm really just sad I couldn't go with somebody to savor the food!
