Could they BE more obnoxious??
I do not care how good the sushi is - every single time I walk in there, its not "hello" or "welcome", but "do you have a reservation?" Even when the place is not jammed and there are tables available, the maitre d' still looks at you like he is doing you a big, fat favor by allowing you to eat there. He even told us we could not sit at a table we asked to - at 2:30 in the afternoon. I'd rather not have their fabulous sushi and instead, be treated like a valued customer who helps pay their rent. Get over yourselves - there are way too many sushi spots in NYC for that kind of foul service.

Great sushi - depend on it
I've been going to Sushi-Sen for 20 years or more. It's a special place and I love it. The sushi is always first rate. Sparkling fresh. Regular sushi is dependably delicious and not that expensive. There are a lot of creative specialty dishes that are extraordinary, if you're willing to spend the big $. The atmosphere is quiet and adult at dinner, but the feeling is cool rather than warm. Decor is sophisticated, but understated. The service is professional and courteous, but not particulalry informal and friendly. There is enough room between the tables. You always feel comfortable and they never rush you out. It's convenient to theaters.

Not worth it
Great food...but not worth it. 1 person - 1 spicey tuna roll, 3 uni sushi, 3 eel sushi, miso soup, club soda - $70!

Oiishi - Great Sushi
I ate at the sushi bar and had a delicious salad and miso soup along with sushi recommended by the chef, Yamano. I am Japanese and although there are many good sushi places, Sushi Zen fish was excellent and very fresh with some fish imported from Japan or Spain. The miso soup was excellent -- always a good sign for food to come and the salad dressing to die for. Although on the pricey side, the food was well worth it, sushi chef Yamano very sweet and wait staff and management very attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a quiet evening dinner date or to sit at sushi bar by oneself.

Tasty, expensive, quiet
the food was good at sushi zen, although the avocado in one of my rolls seemed way off - almost like it had been whipped. the prices are somewhat high, but obviously you can tell that from the menu on this site. the room we sat in was very quiet, which i did not like, and the waiter overcharged our cards (mistaking 114 for 174) but was quick to fix it. overall, it was good, but probably best for sushi aficionados rather than the average sushi eater.

Favorite Japanese in NYC
We went to Sushi Zen at the end of January before catching a Bway musical. As ALWAYS, the food was top notch, the service was very gracious and the pricing reasonable. We were happy with the specials and all the recommendations made by our waitress. It was nice to see Japanese patrons at this restaurant - a sign of high quality! We are looking forward to coming back again.

Did not meet my expectations
My husband and I are frequent patrons of sushi restaurants, but we were disappointed with our experience at Sushi Zen in New York City. Sushi Zen does not offer quality sushi, given the expensive prices on the menu. I would highly suggest going to another sushi bar/restaurant in the area for better quality sushi. Expect to pay about $8-10.00 per piece, not per roll. The servers and staff are basically over your should while you dine, and the general atmosphere is not exciting.
