So we ordered the special cold sake which was great and then asked for the cod appetizer which was great. The sashimi was so fresh and melted in your mouth and then the rolls. The best were the salmon with warm tomato on top and the eel with cucumber diced. Just great!!!!

We originally had reservation at a table. When we came in, we asked the woman at the door if we could sit at the Sushi Bar. She said something with very limited English and a frown, but we did not understand what she said. Our waiter was not friendly. The other day, we asked the guy at the door if we could sit at the Sushi Bar because there were several empty seats there. He shook his head instead of saying no. We did not see anyone coming into the Sushi Bar until they closed. I’m sure they are not happy working there.

I am originally from Osaka, Japan. I never quite liked sushi very much. Sushi of Gari, however, has made me into a sushi fanatic. Gari has simply the best sushi. Sushi Seki does not compare (in terms of another highly rated UES sushi restaurant). My husband and I dream of the Tuna of Gari selection (where one gets the most beautiful selection of sushi made with tuna, each one inventively created), to the point that my husband started to call the restaurant itself Tuna of Gari (instead of Sushi of Gari). You must go.

Sushi of Gari is by far the best sushi in NYC, hands down! I find the atmosphere to be quaint and yet welcoming. Many would say it is tight quatered, isn't that typical of NYC? The service is outstanding, the waiters/waitresses describe the sushi to you in a way you not only understand what your eating but you can taste the sushi before the experience even occurs. The sushi melts in your mouth, and literally needs NO soy sauce. I recommend the Tuna of Gari for all you Tuna lovers. Literally there is no going wrong at this place! Oh and the shumai all I have to say is I have yet to have shumai that can even compare to Sushi of Gari's! The entire experience and night out is priceless!

Yes, the sushi here is good. It is costly but good. The real problem is that the space is so small and they cram you in! The tables are about 4-6" apart and you really have to squeeze in. If you don't get there early, like 6-6:30pm, the room is packed and once your meal is over, you really feel like you should get up and go. Pay the check and goodbye. The staff is cordial but not overly friendly. The waiter on our most recent vist was visibly displeased when we did not order the appetizer special and passed on the expensive "chef's menu". What we did order was good, but not the best I've ever had.

I don't know how to describe the whole experience. but it was really really surreal. it was a dinner that treated from a kind friend and he suggested to do the chef's special. 5 of us couldnt stop eating. first of all, i had NEVER tasted my whole sushi meal without a drop of soy sause, and the sushi that was served couldnt be combine with soy sause because it will kill the taste. i mean can you imagine how good of the quality the fish was. every plates that our lovely waiter brought us wasnt only the creative and delicious sushi. but also SURPRISES! i know the bill had to be enormous, but i would totally do it again even if i have to buy all my lovely friends some precious meals like this. it was so good that i told myself i will never go for any cheap sushi after this. it was really a great experience.

The first visit (with reservation) was not impressive perhaps because of the high expectation we had going in. After many months, we decided to go back and give it a second chance. no reservation this time, we went early. Service was fast since we were the 2nd customer. amaebi was fresh and melt-in-your-mouth soft. nigiri is good size, no big rice and giant cuts. overall, we decided that you gotta go without any expectations to get a good experience!
