Best Indian Food in the Village
Excellent, beautifully prepared and seasoned Indian Food. Generous portions. A lovely room and bar. Terrific take-out and delivery. Their Shrimp Biryani is a complex, flavorful absolutely delicious dish. The Chicken Koorma, the best we've ever had. Their vegetarian dishes are original and bountiful, our favorite is the Channa Saag. Their appetizers are all outstanding. Our favorites are the Scallops, Aloo Tikkyas and the Samosa. Their lunch specials are great buys. BTW we see many local business owners, writers and artists eating and drinking here both at lunch and late in the evening because not only is the food excellent, but the place is good looking, elegant, yet warm, welcoming and easy to be in.

Great
For more upscale Indian food, this place is great. The food is excellent, service is attentive and a pleasant dining room. Definitely worth a visit! The dinners I have had here have been delicious and never fail to please.

An Indian dream
My wife & I have been regulars here since they opened and there's not a better Indian restaurant in the City (and we've been to very many of them). There are more expensive ones (and certainly cheaper ones) but none that combine the amazing flavors, consistent quality, superb service and relaxing ambiance of Surya. We love Indian food and are truly blessed to have such a wonderful restaurant in the West Village. If you like Indian food it doesn't get much better than this. (The tandoori lamb chops - Gurnar - are out of this world!)

Really good food
Reading the past mixed reviews, I wasn't so sure of what to expect. I am so glad I gave this place a chance. The food was delicious. We had the samosas and chicken pakoras for the starters and it was good. For our main course we had the okra which was delicious, the shrimp pappas was outstanding and the vegetable biryani was very flavorful. The best thing about the food was that it was not very greasy like other Indian places. The food is also not too spicy, but spice loving Indians should also give it a try, because the flavors are so great. Shows to prove that Indian food can be very tasty without being greasy and spicy!

Disappointing Food
I recently picked up a Lunch-to-Go box with two vegetable dishes. Both dish turned out to be a disaster. The Cauliflower was not fully cooked and i havent tasted such a bad Saag paneer ever. Only the Nan bread was good. Total waste of money.

Bland Indian Food; Disappointing
Our recent lunch at Surya turned out to be a disappointment. Chicken Tikka Masala was bland in taste while Tandoori Chicken had a weird texture. On the Veg side, Alu Baingan was too mushy and a bit sour. Even Dal Makhani was not good and had a raw flavor.. Surya is a much overrated Indian restaurant in downtown NYC.

Great Chicken Dishes!
I really like Surya - I work in the West Village and often get lunch there - if you eat in, its 50% off the regular menu price, which is nice. I always have one of the chicken dishes, and I really like the fact that they use all white meat boneless chicken. My favorites are the chicken korma and the chicken biriyani. The service is very good and attentive as well. I don't usually like Indian food, but Surya is excellent - the flavors are great, not too spicy. I would recommend it!
