Great Find
I've been to Tokyo several times and visit many izakayas. This is one of the best in the city, with great food and great prices. Don't come here expecting a romantic or lavish atmosphere; what you'll see is a basic place that seems a little frayed around the edges with cheap tables and chairs and little to no decor. But it's totally authentic, and you'll find yourself coming back for more.

A jewel
This is some of the best Japanese food that I've had in the city and certainly one of the only decent places in the vicinity of Columbia University. The standard fare is prepared well and served unpreteniously, but inquire of the waitstaff for recommendations of the daily specials. Sake and other alchohol are permanently 1/2 price which helps keep the bill so reasonable. I always go late at night (open until 3am on weekends) and enjoy the comfortable emptiness of the dining room and sushi bar. Portions are good for the money and quality matches the warm hospitality.

Sun-chan
Sun-chan is one of the best Japanese restaurants on the Upper Westside. The waiters and waitresses are very kind and always welcoming. The service isn't quick, but is faster than most other restaurants. One of the best things about Sun-chan is their Gourmet Box. You can get rolls, tempura, meat, and rice all in one serving. It gives you a chance to taste many different foods at once. At Sun-chan they have jazz music in the background which is a nice touch. If you're ever on the Upper Westside you need to go to Sun-chan.

Totally Authentic
Wonderful Japanese food. Great selection, not just a sushi joint. The portions are large and the food delicious. I have had the sushi, the large soups, the stews and many of the grilled choices which are done on a little charcoal grill right there for you to enjoy the smell. The sake selection is excellent and the service is great. Highly reccomended - the best Japanese in this price range on the UWS.

Greatest Teriyaki
Hands down the best Teriaki in the city. I travel uptown once a week just to go here. Everything else- great as well, I would highly recommend green salad with homeade carrot and ginger dressing, tempora, and any of the menu features with steak. A+

Great food at a good price
This is the best japanese on the upper west side, in a low-key atmosphere, jazz music in the background, and the freshest sushi you can get. The food is excellent and the price is totally reasonable. Not trendy, very friendly, and a great deal.

Good Japanese food
The food is prepared with care and we go here a couple times a month. Try it if you want authentic Japanese food without a lot of showiness.
