Give them an inch they will take a mile!
I've been to Stout several times before for a meal. Because of the great location I wanted to host a football watch party at this venue for about 20-30 people, nothing formal. I was informed about private rooms but I did nto desire that. I was told that there was an area available for reservation but it would have to be confirmed with the party planner. I was then informed that this "available" area could not be reserved due to happy hour (after I was told there was no happy hour). If I wanted to reserve that small bar space in the back it would be a $2500 bar guarantee. That means my guests would have to spend about $100 for bar food on a random night?

Slow service aside, BEST place near MSG
your search stops here when trying to find a restaurant around the Penn Station/MSG area. the food, great! the atmosphere, feels like you've stepped into a London pub. the service is on the slow side but if you can tolerate that then you shouldn't have any complaints. i always get the spinach dip and chicken tenders. their avocado dip is to die for! its a haven for sports fans as well. great spot to go before or after a game.

Great Stout! Thats Great Beer!
My wife and I stopped in for lunch just before a show at Madison Square Gardens which is right across the street. The service was very good and the food was slightly above average. It gets hot upstairs but might be a little quieter. The whole experience was excellent other than the heat. I had the cornmeal crusted oysters and shepards pie. The blue cheese tartar sauce for the oysters was a great departure from the norm. My wife had the salmon burger and fries and loved it. I usually get an " It's OK" from her, but she clearly enjoyed this. Then again, maybe it was the beer. They had a very good selection of bottled stouts from england, scotland and the U.S. Of course we couldn't stop at just one. NOW LISTEN UP. You cannot be within 4 or 5 blocks of this place and not try these 2 beers. First, from Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown Pa. is the Storm King Stout. Very rich with a level of hops that you don't usually find in a stout. This was a great beer. I couldn't drink it all night but it is awsome just to savor a bottle or two. On the other hand, the best beer that we had was the Saint Joseph's Cream Stout from England. It was extremely thich and rich and as smooth a texture that you will ever find. It came in a nice 20oz. bottle and cost $10 but it was well worth it. All in all. The entire experience cost about $80 with everything I mentioned and two additional beers, including tip. Not bad at all. I will have lunch here everytime I'm in the area.

You can find better
The main issue with Stout is their rude wait staff. The food and atmosphere is great, however I would never recommend anyone going there.

Okay...
The fried clams were yummy. The brat burger was also tasty. The service not great. We wanted to enjoy a drink at the bar and we asked for a menu but the server kept bugginh us. The drinks were average. Nice decor though.

Good food, good service
Just went to Stout for the first time on Saturday. I was meeting a few others and I got there first so I couldn`t be seated until the whole group got there. Fair enough. I had a pint at the bar. The tall fella was cool and made me feel welcome. As soon as the gang arrived they gave us a great table. Lots of screens. My girlfriend thought it was a bit loud but I thought it was great. The service was very attentive for such a big place. Our waitress really knew her menu which was a great help as we had a big group. We got a couple of large pies. They were awsome!! one was kinda like a Reuben sandwich ...but on a pizza. Try it and you`ll be back for more!! We also had a range from burgers to salads. Everyone was happy with their choices. The appetizers were great for sharing and came out really quickly. Our server was cool. She recommended some clubs for us to go to later on in the night and suggested we come back for a beer before the Rangers game the next day. (GO RANGERS) I`ll be back at Stout for sure. Good beer service and food. Go and you`ll go again.

Great food/beer, poor service
There are about 100 waitresses milling around this restaurant but (a) getting the same one back twice, or (b) getting one to come over more often than every 25 minutes is almost impossible. We had a table but had to keep going up to the bar to get drinks because the waitress kept going to the corner of the bar to giggle and gossip with the other waitresses. Stick to the bar and you'll be fine.
