really disappointing food
Went there on a Saturday night and only two tables were taken. The waitress was very good, she knew all the specials (a long list) and told us what was not available on the menu up front. I had a hard time choosing between the chicken gumbo and the fried chicken and the waitress recommended I go with the fried chicken. It was the poorest fried chicken I ever had which make me think the gumbo would have been worse. The skin was not crunchy at all, it was still gummy and the meat itself looked old and low quality and it was undercooked. It also had more fat under the skin and veins, basically as if the chicken had not been cleaned prior to cooking. My friend ordered the rice and beans and a side of sweet potatoes, the potatoes were also a little undercooked. The rice and beans were good and so were the garlic mash potatoes.

A Po' Place!
Where do I begin? We called during the day (Sat) on the off chance that they may take reservations. We were assured that if we arrived at 8:30 we'd have no problem getting seated - first red flag, what restaurant in this neighborhood can easily seat at this time? When we arrived we were told that a table would be opening up in ten mins - no problem. But then we noticed that as other couples arrived they were getting seated immediately. When we enquired about this the waitress told us that they had reserved a table?! Second red flag - poor service. 50 mins later we were seated and realized that several things on the menu were not available. The apps came pretty quickly and were ok - chicken gumbo and squash/carrot soup. Eventually the entrees came and the rib eye steak which was supposed to be medium rare was practically moo-ing on my plate. We couldn't get the attention of the staff so had to walk across the restaurant, plate in hand to report the problem - do you think an apology might have at least happened at this point? The St Louis rib was worse than a fast-food rib sandwich - say no more. To get the bill we decided to put our coats on so that we might get out of the place before midnight, to our surprise, no item had been taken off the bill perhaps as a good will gesture for our unpleasant evening. Needless to say we will not return, which is a shame because the atmosphere is great but the staff, service and food leave a lot to be desired - can't have a good restaurant guys without those elements!

Decent at best
Was looking for a good cajun place in the neighborhood for my birthday dinner, and happened upon Stan's. The atmosphere is great, as is the service/music. The reason we chose this place is because I was trying to find a place with shrimp/crawfish etoufee, and the online menu for Stan's claimed they had it. But once we arrived, I found the etoufee was listed with chicken. When I asked the waiter why, he answered that shrimp and crawfish were too expensive. So..I decided to try the Taste of New Orleans and my boyfriend got the BBQ shrimp & grits. For appetizers, shrimp and crawfish stuffed zucchini, and angles on horseback (bacon wrapped fried oysters). The apps were good, but the entrees were disappointing, to say the least. The shrimp and grits, although the taste was decent, were cold. And my meal, which included red beans and andouile, had no andouille. Gumbo which was to include shrimp and crawfish had NO seafood at all. And the etoufee had a layer of coagulation on top. Needless to say, we were bummed.

Great Food w. Great People
I am new to Boreum Hill so I was exploring the neighborhood seeing what it offers. I walked by Stan's Place on Atlantic this past Sunday, the whole New Orleans decor of the restaurant just looked so beautiful and welcoming. I decided to order their creole Cafe Du Monde coffee and their freshly made beignets to go (which I might add came pretty close to how they serve it at the actual Cafe Du Monde). I didn't stay because it looked like the servers were finishing up the brunch service. So today I went back to try out their dinner menu. Let me tell you this, the seasoned flat iron steak Po' Boy with carmalized pepper onions hit the spot. The serving was pretty huge, just how they do it New Orleans and their seasoned potatoes fries is a new addiction. Another perk was I got a free Abita beer with my Po Boy. What a deal! I haven't seen Abita beer around these areas since I've moved from New Orleans 5 years ago. Overall, I really do recommend Stan's Place. The decor is very reminiscent of the French Quarters and the food truly speaks for itself.

Great food-poor amount
I go to Stan's Place quite often and have tried almost everything on the menu. The flavor of the food is outstanding but the one thing that always confuses me is the quantity of food. If you order a Po Boy you get a very nice sized sandwich with outstanding cajun potatoes. Then when you order the Chicken Jambalaya you get one small thigh on top of a very limited amount of Jambalaya. The taste is very good but the size is not enough for the average person. Order the pasta dish and you won't come close to finishing. I think the place is good and the food is quality but they need to address the portion issue. Also, they are very slow in the service. Friendly but slow.

Disappointed First Timer
After reading the superb reviews, I expected a better experience. Given, the Southern Fried Chicken was tasty and crispy, I thought that for 12 dollars there should have been more than one piece accompanied by some garlic (very weak) mashed potatoes. There was also a small biscuit of the Pillsbury type that you make from the tube. The Coke was in this puny 8 oz. bottle.(trendy, but not at all sufficient to deal with the spices in the dish). Basically, for me, this place had a value problem. A second piece of chicken and some greens would have made everything fine.
