Not recommended
Me and my husband came here expecting to have a great steak considering its a steak house. The place was pretty much empty so we sat down and ordered. They handed out cold rolls then shortly after brought our dinner. I ordered a steak well done.... how about well raw! It took 3 times for them to get the steak cooked after I had cut it all up so when they "heated" it up some more it would at least cook through. $48 for a raw steak. Would not go here again.

We did not even stay for dinner
As a steak lover I try to experience something different each time I to a steakhouse. I had seen this place on TV and came here. First of all, the entire place was empty except for one other family and there was no atmosphere. The host/owner looked annoyed that we were there. We asked if we could have a drink at the bar before we sat down to eat and he seemed more annoyed, stayed quiet and pointed at the bar. The bartendress was incredibly rude. We asked her some questions about the history of the steakhouse and she snapped that we were asking too many questions and she only cared about her bills. Then we asked if we could settle the bill at our table instead of the bar and she snapped yet again! She went off on a rant about how bar tabs are seperate but we could do what we wanted because she was not holding a gun to our head making us pay at the bar. We were completely caught off guard and instead of giving us a simple answer she was a complete jerk! It made everything so uncomfortable. The owner saw her but he did not do anything. We gave her no tip and walked out without dinner.

Only you if appreciate top quality meat
Staghorn serves up one of the best steaks in NYC. The service isn't exactly friendly. The place is rarely full. Its not a place to be seen. There isn't much in the way of value. But if you want an amazing steak for $40, this is your place. Order wine, sides ect and they will take care of you. Act like an amateur and well...

Stay Away
Like previous reviewers, I also noticed immediately that when we came in, the place was completely empty. The staff and manager are arrogant and do not care about the customers. Not worth the price to be eating uncomfortably in a room full of empty tables.

I would not recommend this
We travelled to New York City from England to stay for a week at New Year. When we asked our hotel concierge if they could recommend a lively American steakhouse for the Saturday night, this is where he sent us. When we arrived, we could not see through the window that the restaurant only had one other couple eating, otherwise we may not have gone in. We went in and the lady who greeted us was friendly and professional, we were shown to our table and given menus. We chose to have a steak each and share the side order of mashed potatoes but we were made to feel as if we should have ordered starters too (my fiance was sure he heard the waiter say to te manager "they've only ordered steak"). Shortly after we arrived, the other couple left and one other group of people came in. The restaurant was extremely quiet and had no atmosphere whatsoever. While eating our meal, it felt as if the 3 waiters were circling our table like sharks, always hovering close by to attend to our every need. We found this to be intimidating and irritating. The waiters were all Italian American and would talk amongst themselves in Italian, which just added to the intimidation for us. When the bill came, though it was our own fault, we did not notice that they had added 20% tip for themselves and paid by card, adding $40 tip in cash. We only noticed the next day when we looked at the receipt, but I feel that not only was it extremely dishonest not to bring it to our attention that the tip had been added into the bill just to be sure we were aware, but very cheeky to add 20%]tip when I would have personally paid a minimum of 15% as the service was over-bearing, over-attentive and intimidating. There were more staff than customers and I could not wait to leave. I could not have been more disappointed with that choice for a Saturday night, and would recommend it perhaps for business dinners but nothing more than that.

great!
I've been to every top steakhouse in NYC at least twice over the last decade. Many I've been to dozens of times. (Too many business lunches and dinners to count) Staghorn's Filet, Rib eye and Porterhouse are all in the top 5 in the city. The bacon is the real deal as well. The sides are very good but nothing stands out above the other steakhouses. The staff is steakhouse professional. If you know your meat and go to a steakhouse for it's steak, this is gem you really should try...
